--For starters, the biggest visitors this week: 2022 wing/forward D’Ante Bass, 2023 forward GG Jackson, 2024 wing Cam Scott. Brandon Gardner’s Gray Collegiate team was there but Gardner didn’t make the trip to Columbia. Jazian Gortman’s Keenan team was also at team camp but Gortman was absent, taking an official visit to Florida State. A reminder Gortman’s already been on campus this June for a South Carolina unofficial. Gardner's also been on campus multiple times since the start of June as well.
--Bass is a name we haven’t reported on a lot, and it’s because he’s someone that’s just popped up on the Gamecocks’ roster recently. Bass doesn’t have a lot of attention on him right now, and this weekend was the first time South Carolina’s staff had a chance to see him play in person.
To say Bass was impressive was an understatement, showcasing high-level athleticism and a good-looking shot while also not afraid to go in and rebound in the paint and attack the rim. He also looked really good on the defensive end, defending Jackson well in a game for stretches and again later playing well against Combine Academy, one of the better teams in the region and one of the best teams at camp this week.
He took a quick tour of the campus while in town, and he’s someone the Gamecocks could opt to go after and recruit as part of the 2022 class. They had multiple coaches (Frank Martin and assistants) watching both of his games Saturday.
--The Gamecocks also had multiple assistants watching Jackson play his games, and he was again impressive in his second straight weekend at South Carolina’s team camp. His athleticism is off the charts, obviously, and he even was able to step out and hit a three-pointer in a game against Combine Academy as well.
We wrote about it in this update here, but Jackson’s already been on campus now twice and told GamecockCentral he’ll be back on campus for an unofficial visit (sans a team camp setting) next week, June 21. He’s taken an unofficial to Wake Forest and will have another to Virginia Tech.
Feedback I’ve gotten on Jackson has been good, and the Gamecocks are in a good position right now and have built a good relationship with Jackson. I will reiterate there is still a long way to go in his recruitment and he’s not even started his junior season.
--He wasn’t on campus this weekend but the Gamecocks did extend an offer to North Carolina 2022 shooting guard Michael Zanoni, who is playing for CP3 this summer. Zanoni was actually one of the final visitors to campus before things shut down in March of 2020. He took in South Carolina’s 2020 home finale (a win over Mississippi State) and picked up an offer this week.
Some other schools he said have been recruiting him: Clemson, Tennessee, Utah State, Virginia Tech, App State, Elon, Yale, Cornell, Mt. Saint Mary’s, Loyola Chicago.
Zanoni will likely head down to Columbia for a visit sometime this July to check things out again and also take a trip to Utah State.
Zanoni is former high school and current AAU teammates with another Gamecock target, 2022 center Christian Reeves. Reeves recently picked up a South Carolina offer as well.
--Just a quick note on the impending assistant coach hire and ongoing search, nothing is official yet, but I will say again it’s trending towards Brian Steele being elevated to the third on-court assistant.
