I was able to watch two of the three scrimmages this week at Founders Park, and I thought I'd pass along a few observations from watching.
Kingston's using fall ball right now to give a lot of younger players a shot. I've been really impressed with a few freshmen right now.
--Noah Campbell doubled in Wednesday's scrimmage and looked smooth in the outfield as well. I think that he's going to have a legitimate shot at a starting spot Opening Day. Ian Jenkins, who Kingston said has 70 power on the MLB's 20-80 scale, walked twice. That was his biggest concern coming to school, about pitch selection. He's been laying off bad pitches and he can do a lot of damage if he gets one in his wheelhouse.
--Carmen Mlodzinski has been good as well, hitting the mid-90s as a freshman. Mason Streater has also been solid backing up Bride at third. If his bat can come along, he's got the defensive chops to play. He doubled twice in Saturday's scrimmage.
--LHP Corey Stone threw a few good innings after some rough outings where he couldn't get a feel of the zone. He threw three scoreless innings and walked one batter Wednesday. He pitched to contact and got easy fly ball outs. If he can keep that up, he could be a reliable option out of the bullpen as a matchup pitcher.
--Wilson Beattie also had a nice perfect two innings and his slider showed a lot of life. I was really impressed with it.
--The more I watch Jacob Olson in the middle infield, the more I'm sold on it. He's athletic and has a cannon for an arm, which helps. His bat deserves to be in the lineup and if he can get more reps there he can be really good up the middle.
--Jonah Bride has taken a lot of steps forward this offseason it looks like. He's showing a lot of power and his glove has always been great. He's a guy I think can hit in the middle of the lineup and can be productive.
