OT: Bowater plant stinking up the Rock Hill area

@king ward, is this really as bad as the article in the paper makes it sound? You worked there most of your life didn't you? What I read made it sound like they are polluting the air and the water but are denying it. I lived around the International Paper mill when I lived in Georgetown. If the wind was blowing the right way it was pretty bad, but I learned to live with it. (For 8 years)

Anyone else from up around that way?
It's been that way for 60 plus years.

The City of Rock Hill has adopted the IPMC. They could put those codes to work but they are normally used as intimidation and fines for individual property owners. The city and county governments who have adopted the IPMC in South Carolina claim the codes are to be used for beatification, sounds good but is far from the truth.

The International property maintenance code is just that, it sets minimum standards for maintenance of property such as no junk cars or overgrown grass and weeds. It also sets minimum standards for maintaining a house. It does not address beautification of the city. The zoning ordinance sets landscaping standards. If you'd like to read the ipmc go to www.iccsafe.org. In the search box enter ipmc and enjoy.

Sorry, I have found nothing to enjoy about the IPMC. I have found very much to the contrary.

Your idea of what it is and what it is used for is one that some people have in common with you. And one that is incorrect. What it is used for is to set minimum standards for the appearance of property. Each jurisdiction has their own development ordinance it sets minimum standards for landscaping but that is just it. Minimums. If you don't agree with those, get involved and work to change the ordinance. That's the only way it will change. Not jumping on you just trying to educate.

Bowater was one of the most hated place to get sent to when I worked on the railroad for csx. It sucked to have to switch that place out.

I’ll take a paper mill over chicken coops or fields fertilized with chicken or turkey crap. by the way I lived within sight/hearing distance of bowater and don’t remember it smelling that bad. That was back in 80’s and 90’s.

As a kid, for a few years my family lived about 80 miles from Bowater and at least once or twice a week we caught that terrible odor when the wind was blowing from the SW. If it smelled any worse closer, I couldn't imagine.

I am currently working at a pellet mill with just a little burnt wood smell occasionally. However, it is sandwiched between a paper mill, again love the smell, and a Tyson chicken plant. Tyson easily overpowers everything most days and is unbearable at times especially on Thursdays, cook days.
