OT: Can someone explain the aluminum can shortage to me?

Trump signs Save Our Seas 2.0, giving plastics recycling infrastructure potential boost

  • Both chambers of Congress recently passed the final version of the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act (S.1982) and it now awaits President Trump's signature. Multiple sources anticipate Trump will sign it. The bill aims to reduce, remove and prevent plastic waste in the environment, especially waterways, through clean-up efforts and investments in plastic recycling infrastructure.
  • The bill would provide $55 million in funding each year through 2025 for improving "local post-consumer materials management," including municipal recycling programs. Funding would also be available for local waste management authorities.

Trump was big on stopping plastic waste and encouraging recycling. Senator Warren proposed a "wealth tax" on rich Americans based on assets not income to combat climate change. Trump opposed that and is probably the source of reports you read of his "cutting recycling spending".
That's news to me. Thanks for posting.
Gee, wonder how I didnt hear about that?

Maybe. If that's the issue, then it's totally understandable. But the going line is that it's all due to the shortage. Again, there has been no apparent decrease in the total amount of product. I was at the store around Christmas when the Coke guy was stocking shelves and I asked if they'd just quit making the caffeine free Coke Zero. He said, "oh, no, it's not discontinued. It's just the can shortage."

If coca cola has a limited supply of cans available then it makes perfect sense to use the cans to replenish the best sellers. Why fill out of stocks on items which sell at a much lower volume than core items? Ask your local grocery store manager which coca cola items are most important to keep on the shelves and I doubt caffeine free anything makes the list.
