Don't know about my car insurance yet, but my health insurance went up over $100 per month. I thought the Affordable Care Act was supposed to help reduce healthcare costs for most of us. O' well, there goes another politician's empty promises.

Pepsi - check with Herring Insurance Services in Lexington. The owner is a member here and a great Gamecock. He saved me a bunch of money with better coverage. My insurance did not go up at all.

mine jumped about 10% but I did have $8000 worth of hail damage to my cars this past May

Every damn year, just like all other types of insurance. It's a racket, but too risky to do without.

I remember reading once where you should shop car insurance every 7yrs. I believe you probably should cut that in half at least.

Three years ago we switched from Liberty Mutual to Progressive and saved ~$300 per year, apples-to-apples.

We just added my son (16) and a vehicle for him and saw a $1600+ increase for a year. We shopped and are in the process of switching to Allstate - apples-to-apples policy - saving $600/yr.

DEFINITELY a freaking racket!! Just gotta watch them.

Pepsi...I own a small Independent agency & I can tell you that sometimes your rates are going to change just because the carrier saw a increases in losses & decrease in profits & It has probably nothing to do with you as an indiviual risk at all. I do this for a living & I would STRONGLY encourage you to shop every 3 - 4 years. If you are dealing with a captive agent ( Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide, Farm Bureau, etc.. ) then their agents can only offer you what they have from those carriers and you will have to shop other places. If you are dealing with an Independent agency then you need to call them & set up an appt. & have your agent price you with his various carriers he keeps in house. I carry 5-6 prefered risk carriers ( Travelers, Safeco, Grange, Progressive etc..) & some bigger IA's carry more than that. Good Luck ! LP

I've had State Farm since I got out of college in 2000 and I probably pay too much. However, the 2 times I've filed a claim (one home, one auto) they bend over backwards to make it right. I'm always too nervous to shop around because I might save a few bucks up front and end up getting screwed over when the time comes.

That's why I've stayed with Farm Bureau, as they've always done right by me when I've called upon them.

I've learned it's good to shop insurance, every few years. As the car depreciates, your insurance should decrease but your agent rarely calls you up to lower your premium. Call around and get some quotes, then call your agent.

Pepsi, if u or ur father (other relatives might work) were at one time in the military u might qualify for USAA. Go to their site at www.usaa.com to see. They just relaxed there membership to allow non military family members to join.

Not mine... I have USAA...
Yep they're good until they have to pay a claim. Been there done that

I write commercial insurance and some personal. What people don't realize is that we're all in a pool with all other South Carolinians and if the pool files a bunch of claims, everybody's rates go up and the claimants' rates go up even more. With the historical driving records of the people of this state, rates are always going to go up.

???????????? I've had numerous claims, car and house, taken care of with no problems whatsoever. Hell, I even had my house burn up in front of my eyes and 3 adjusters swoop in to save the day within 24 hours. Never had a better experience with any other company/corporation in my entire life.

Congratulations, but I've heard and experienced MANY problems with getting a claim paid from USAA.

I checked into that. I have USAA as my investment company but don't qualify for USAA car insurance since I was not in the military (missed out by one number in the 1970 lottery system). My Dad fought in WWII, definitely served as an officer, Signal Corps / Army Air Corps (radar operator) with the Army and served in New Guinea.

There were USAA commercials on the radio stating exactly what you said. I presented my case with USAA and they said, sorry, we meant if your Dad was a member of USAA, not just if he was in the military. I complained and they pulled their commercial and I have not heard it lately. Best of luck, though.

Sure, no insurance is going to pay every claim. A lot of those folks usually don't have legit claims to begin with or have misread/misuderstood their policy/coverage, just cry fowl when they get turned down. That is the goal of the insurance industry - pay as little claims as possible. And to take it a step furthe, USAA, even after my fire, insured my next house on the spot no questions asked. There's a reason they're well respected and a top insurancy agency, and it's not because they don't pay claims.

I have Progressive and my annual cost for auto insurance has gone down by about $2,300 in the past year or so thanks to a citation and 2 at fault accidents dropping off after 3 years of incident free driving. Progressive is great until you've had a couple of marks on your driving record, then they stick you with some serious premium increases.

There's not an insurance company in the world that SOMEONE doesn't have this story about. I've had 2 auto claims and a HO insurance claim all with USAA and I haven't had a single issue. The HO insurance claim was over $40,000 in damage and required putting my family up in a hotel for 3 months and it all went without a hiccup.

Bottom line is insurance companies have their processes in place like anyone else. It sucks they didn't pay your claim but I find it hard to believe they didn't have good reason not to. I've had USAA for auto insurance for 15 years now and don't have a single complaint in the world. Same with their banking and HO insurance too and their rates are very competetive. I'm a financial advisor and we use a 3rd party company to offer P&C insurance to our clients and the premiums I can offer generally don't beat USAA and if they do, it's not by much and I typically recommend staying with USAA if they feel a sense of loyalty (I do) or it's just convenient for them.

Switched to USAA in 1986 from State Farm after SF screwed us by taking 11 weeks to total a car. Have never had a problem getting a claim paid by USAA, auto or home. Not only did rates not go up, we got an end of year rebate of close to $250.

+ 2

I don't have it any more as I work for a major corporation that partnered with Met Life to offer a large group policy that winded up being cheaper than USAA for homeowners and auto.

Before that group discount it wasn't even close though and I was with USAA.

Still have life, loan and personal property with them though. Best insurance company ever, no one else even comes close.

I have Safeco through an independent agent. I like them. They treated me fine on my recent hail damage (roof of my house).

Your insurance can also go up depending on how many claims your particular car is having.

My car is higher to insure because it's one of those that shows up on the "most stolen" lists and "more costly to repair" lists- so my insurance on it is higher.

But considering the quality of drivers in South Carolina, we are lucky any insurance company is willing to do business in South Carolina.

I don't sell for USAA as they do direct sells & I am an IA however, in almost all the trade journals I see USAA is consistently in the top 1-5 spot every year in terms of client satisfaction. The few times that one of my clients have had a accident with an insured of USAA it has been fairly smooth. I have no bad things to say about them. In regards to the drivers in SC ...I Completly agree LOL but an even BIGGER problem is the number of folks who drive around with no insurance. They may be out a few days to forever. I had a guy come in the other day who said he did not even remember the last time he did have insurance. The only reason he came to see me was he was buying a car & was getting a loan for the purchase & the CU was verifing the coverage before they would complete the deal. SMH I would like to add a side note -PLS have your agent bump your uninsured & underinsured up from the state Min. It does not cost that much more & trust me the agent won't get rich off of it but it could save you down the road .

I'm not trying to burst your bubbles, but I know insurance very well and my claim with USAA did not get paid until I got an attorney involved. Believe me I did not want to involve an attorney, but was forced to and then it was magically paid. I can't speak for the other people who related stories to me.

Anybody have Amica? I have them for HO, car and a personal liability umbrella. Their rates seem pretty good to me. Never had to file a claim, but the reviews I have read are pretty solid.
