A restaurant added a "service charge" to my bill when I paid with my debit card...WTH?

Happens here in Florida quite often. The banks make interest off of you and fees on every credit transaction from any business. In these times and with the squeeze on profits, be it supplies or labor cost, expect more and more of these fees to be passed on to the user.

Was it a small bill? Some places charge a fee if you swipe a card on an amount under a certain total.

Also, plenty of gas stations charge one price if you pay cash and another if you swipe a card. "Merchant services" costs money

As the other poster said probably offsetting credit card fees.

We may be instituting something similar. Due to shortages our supplies cost is up 40% this month as we scramble to find items from other suppliers. If it goes another month, we will institute a surcharge rather than a price increase and hope it’s temporary.

Yeah, becoming pretty commonplace. I know of at least 3 of my monthly bills that have some type of surcharge.

One of our essential products that we use is made of steel. Our supplier ordered 30 million pounds of raw steel. They got 8 million. Went from 1 week availability to 4-6 weeks overnight. Oh, and they added a temporary surcharge until further notice of 30%. Would have been nice to have a warning.

Had that happen to me. I don't really like it. When I ran my business I considered the credit card fees to be CODB. Thus it was factored into my pricing. This is what I think businesses should be doing now. The prices will only be slightly higher. Why give your customers a reason to be unhappy? I guess they think we'll be mad at the credit card companies instead of them, but I don't think it really works out that way.

This ends in one of two ways IMO.

Someone said in another thread the CoVid situation put our flawed economic policies into warp speed in terms of exposing the flaws.

So either, quality of life in this country is reduced for several years to come as we continue down this same path.

Or eventually the cracks in the system touch enough people in enough areas that we understand a 100% globalized policy has inherent risks and we adapt to a more modified global economy.

Or it’s the end of times which I don’t think it is.
