OT: Pete Rose. He just doesn't get it

You saw Ty Cobb play?

Lol yeah, compared to you I'm sure I am. But with better table manners. 🙂
I was alive at the same time as Cobb.

You're confusing the lifetime ban (or sometimes reported as "indefinite suspension" as above) from MLB with being ineligible for induction into the HOF. They are two separate, but easily confused, issues.

It was after his ban from MLB that the HOF passed a rule banning those players on the permanently ineligible list from induction.

The issue at hand is not whether he deserves to play baseball again. As we all know, he agreed to that in 1989. The totally separate issue is whether he should be in the HOF and he never agreed to a ban from the HOF.

Still spinning, and still incorrect. What exactly is the purpose of a 'lifetime ban' that applies only to playing? That's pointless, because age ultimately imposes a ban on everyone that has ever played. In the twilight of his career, MLB levied a severe punishment that was otherwise forthcoming in the very near future anyway?

The reality is that the investigation was headed down a path that would ultimately show that he did bet on the Reds to lose. That revelation wouldn't have been good for anyone involved. The easy way out of that predicament for both the league and player was to permanently ban him from the game, including consideration for the HOF. I remember that agreement being a big deal at the time because of the HOF implications.

It's also telling that Rose has appealed his (agreed upon) ban to every commissioner that has held the position since Giamatti. And each one has said, 'no thanks'. He broke the cardinal rule of baseball. He denied it until he couldn't. He agreed to a lifetime ban in order to avoid making a very bad situation even worse. And the ban prohibits his induction into the HOF. It's about as cut and dry a situation as anyone can imagine, unless you want to practice some sort of revisionist history.

Not sure what you are talking about he was a mean spirited SOB on the forehead who would do what it took to win even if it meant spiking someone . Yes he was an asshole off the field ? What does that have to do with HOF inclusion ? Zip. Rose as a player should be in the Hall . His stats are good enough. His banishment and signed acceptance deny him the Hall. Sad but true.
We're kind of arguing the same point here regarding character being overvalued when judging HOF. Whether true or not (mostly untrue) there were always issues (including murder(s) that didn't happen) surrounding Cobb during and after baseball but he got in because of his superior talent. Rose's behavior (mostly true) occurred after playing and shouldn't keep him from the HOF.

We don't know if Rose bet on the Reds, Phillies or Expos while he was playing. He settled with MLB before the investigation got that far. It's proven that he bet on the Reds as a manager, that is while part of the Reds organization and still very active within MLB. He unfortunately disqualified himself for the HOF through both his actions and his agreed upon settlement.

Believe me, he gets it. He just doesnt care. What hes doing with his comments and statements is seeing what his power can be. He still gambles I am told. So he really doesnt give a crap. He just wants to win. Probably a bentnose bet among his buds.

I don't think a player today doing what Cobb did would ever get in to the HOF. Cobb was voted into the HOF in 1936, a different time.

Pete loves to bet, doesn't he live in Vegas half the year or something? LOL and MLB has its partnership with draft kings, so MLB likes betting as well these days, just not by active MLB players and managers. IMHO a living Pete is not getting in the HOF no matter what he does, so why not? He probably is just thinking. I'm going to do whatever I want to with the time I have left, HOF ship has sailed.
I saw him one time in a sports memorabilia store inside the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace and he looked rough. He was there signing autographs for cha-ching...

Regardless of his rough character, Cobb could play. And was a fairly successful manager.
