OT: SC Roads............

Raising taxes is not the answer because the money won't go where it is intended. It will go to line some fat cat politician's pockets. I bet roads wouldn't' improve one bit.

So, what is the answer? I've read multiple times that it isn't to raise taxes which is fine. What is the solution, then? Where is this money, and how will we turn it into roads?

Back to the original topic. I doubt it would cure everything, but as I mentioned before, NC has a mandatory court cost that has to be paid along with their traffic tickets. I don't know how well it would go over adding something like that in SC. However, I think adding something along those lines with some of the money designated towards roads would definitely help build up funds. I wouldn't be in favor of something as high as NC's, though. Here is a breakdown explaining where the money goes for NC's court cost. Once again for those who don't have experience with it, in NC you receive a fine for speeding (usually at most 30 dollars) that may get reduced but you're still on the hook to pay the court cost for your ticket. This fee is usually close to $200.

Thanks for your answer. I actually live in Charlotte, now, but am originally from Columbia. I got a speeding ticket back in 2003 when I first moved here, but I don't remember the fines involved. I'll checkout that link.

Driving back from Charleston this past Sunday I was truly appalled at the interstate and general road conditions. I want to send the state a bill for a new alignment.

Be glad you didn't ride on I-95 near Walterboro. It's like riding on a bad dirt road.

I heard some rumblings of SC having to spend the $75 million the government gives back to them or they don't receive it all back or something of that nature. And instead of spending that money to fix roads we build new, unnecessary roads in most cases. Our annual budget for roads is $1.6 BILLION, yes BILLION dollars. Something doesn't add up here. Let's ask Hugh Leatherman, shall we?
