I have an older cousin that had to recently enter an Assisted Living facility in Greenville. My cousin is 80 and has been in bad health for the last 20 or so years. Anyway, I called her the other day and she was telling me it is a nice facility located on Heyward Rd. She went on to say there were two women that lived in the facility that were 100 years old and several men that were in their 90s. In fact, my cousin said she was one of the youngest people in the facility.

She said she met one of the ladies that was 100 and that she was very nice, etc., etc. As they got to talking the lady that was 100 years old told her she had finished Greenville HS and my cousin told the 100 year old lady that she finished Parker HS.

The lady that was 100 years old took both of her hands and kind of made a gun out of them and pretended to fire at my cousin. A 100 years old mind you and pretended to shot my cousin. LOL!

They both laughed about it and had a good time. But I couldn't believe that lady would even remember the rivalry.

EDIT: I meant to preface the message by stating Parker HS closed in 1985.

I remember eating at the Rainbow Drive-in and seeing an old Parker Tornadoes Football Schedule on the wall. A few of my dad’s close friends went to Parker. When they talk about it, they seem to recall a bunch of fights.

The worst fight I ever remember involving only fans was at a Parker vs Greenville HS football game. The whole field was covered with fans fighting. And in some instances fans from each school were slugging each other because everyone was not wearing Purple and Gold or Red and White. In fact during those days there was not a whole lot of high school paraphernalia that was available.

What year?
I finished Parker in 1960. I remember the rivelry well. Parade down Main Street before
the game! Cars covered in purple and gold, and red and white streamers. Standing
room only stadium. And of course, a police escort for the officials, after the game!
GOOD TIMES!!

New

My mother was a Parker HS grad.
What year?

51

WOW! I finished in 63, I had cousins to finish in 54, 55, 59 and 62. Also, one of my aunts finished sometime during the 40s. EDIT: I had two other cousins finish in the late 60s or early 70s can't remember the exact years.

As I said above I finished in 63 and I remember all of those things. Also, the worst fight I ever saw, (referenced above) the police had to guard the officials after the game because our side felt like the officials were bias for Greenville.

One other thing I will mention here. I was watching one of the upstate news stations when it was announced Furman was going to move into their new stadium on campus in 1981. The stadium Furman played in from 1936-1980 was Sirrine Stadium which is where Greenville HS played their games and still do today. Anyway, the largest attendance for a single game ever in Sirrine Stadium was not held by Furman but by Parker and Greenville game.

Freddie did you know a girl named Carolyn Hollingsworth? I believe she finished in 63!

That's funny...the worst fight I saw was against Mann and Parker. I think I was a freshman at Mann and at half time and all hell broke loose (Fans and Players). I can't remember if they called the game that night.

Common them in all these fights is Parker. Not from Greenville, but my stepfather did graduate from Pstker in the earlier 50s. Didn’t know Parker was that rough. Who won all those brawls?

I watched Parker and Gaffney play once in Greenville in the 1960’s. I can’t imagine a rougher atmosphere than that at a high school game.

I can. I played for GHS in 71 at Gaffney.

"Helmets on when you come out of the tunnel boys, them damned liquor bottles hurt." Slick Moore.

By then, Wade Hampton was our biggest rival, but Parker was still up there.

It was a social war between Greenville and Parker. GHS kids came from North Main, Cleveland Park, Augusta Rd. areas. They took college prep courses. Parker kids came from the mill areas on the westside of town. Their curriculum was very blue collar oriented (though their brightest and best were sent to Clemson for engineering majors. Mill owners helped with funding tuition.) Wade Hampton was the middle class burbs. JL Mann was the richer burbs.

5 of my teammates and I at GHS had played for Wade Hampton as jayvees but we were bussed back to GHS as juniors. Bussing didn't affect the Parker/Greenville lines as much. I knew a bunch of the Parker (and Berea) players though from little league and pony league baseball and football. Mann was relatively new and Southside was brand new. I think Eastside opened my senior year.

Two Parker questions: Name the qb from Parker who started for our Gamecocks? Name the long time coach at Parker H S.
Mr Smarty Pants(me) knows the answer to number 1. but not 2

No, I did not know her. I just looked up the name in my annual and she was not listed as part of the Senior Class of 63. There was a girl named Glenda Hollingsworth that was junior when I was a senior.

Parker. We use to brag that our team may lose the game but we would win the fight afterwards. In all seriousness while there were certainly some fights they were far and few in-between. I personally, only attended one game, as referenced above, where a huge fight broke out between the fans.

Furman moved in 1961.

Went to Clemson vs Furman game at Sirrine in 1958. It was a sell out. Do not doubt GHS vs PHS held the record. In the old days they filled up the banks and sold standing room tickets.

GHS vs PHS was Clemson vs SC light. We Red Raiders did not like them, at all. The feeling was mutual. When I got to Carolina, the Parker guys were some of my best friends. I loved the Parker colors and thought coach Kendall was great. I knew him pretty well. His children were my class and teammate at GHS.

The Parker guys were tough. Very few games were not close. Anyone going to either school were battle tested for Carolina vs Clemson.

PHS VS GHS 1953: Parker had Carrol Clevenger and Muggs Patterson, Greenville had Red Carter, Perry Nichols and Dana Graham. Greenville won that year, but Parker went on a win streak following that game. I always though we pissed them off.

It is sad to see old Parker High today. I remember the parades down main before and after the games. If your daddy had a convertable, a Jeep or a pick up truck we would load them up and ride Main St. and yell GREENVILLE! We thought it would last forever.

That's why we hated Greenville so badly. We felt like they looked down their collective noses at us.

Not doubting you but are you sure Greenville won the 1953 game? I remember my first Parker vs Greenville game and I had to back track to remember but I swear I thought it was 1953. But, I remember for sure Parker won the first game I ever attended against Greenville, however I could be mistaken about the year.

I lurk over here and have never posted but felt compelled to do so on this one. My father (Coach Bill Phillips) went to Greenville High and played FB,BB and BB at Furman and also the minor leagues. His brother went to Parker and also played in the minors. My dad passed away at 82 in 2012. I was too young to witness the games of Greenville/Parker at Sirrine Stadium but man did I hear the stories. Always 12,000 in the stands and the town shut down. Was a much simpler time I'm sure. And before yall hate on me for being a Heel my nephew and niece are both SC grads!

You are correct. I was thinking about the class of ‘53. The game in ‘53 Parker won. Bailey Hendley was the GHS tailback. Greenville still ran the single wing.

Those days? Slick and Whitey coached against both of those schools. If you are talking 50s heyday of the rivalry, you are correct but the rivalry didn't end til whitey and Slick retired.

Hey SP! MR from White Oak here. Surprised you didn't go to Greenville/Parker games before your dad went to WHHS. Weren't we at League at that time?

A few of us called him, Sigh. Where did that nickname come from? Your dad made Dicky Dietz. He made him work and made him tow the line. After our football practices we would see them out on the field, just the two of them. They played kick ball. Because of it Dietz was the best punter in the state. He was also one of the best baseball player ever, to come from SC. Your dad had a whole lot to do with that.

You probably know all this.
