OT: The Ted Williams Story from ESPN

as i read that story i felt torn..... a daughter that couldn't handle it or a father that could have given up his life. all depends on how todays pc generation goes thru life. Not much different that being a child of one who serves their country..........long stints away from family & home.

it's ez to tell a one sided story.

Ted Williams was a horrible person who could hit a ball and fish in the sea. He was no big deal overall.

I remember an SI article written many years ago about Ted Williams. Apparently around the age of 55 or so, he visited a Red Sox spring training camp to give their hitters some advice on hitting. He could tell that the young guys on the team were taking him with a grain of salt so he sent the equipment manager into the clubhouse to find some shoe polish. When he returned, he picked up a bat and painted the sweet spot of the bat with shoe polish. Then he had the practice pitcher throw him a pitch that he roped up the middle for a hit. That got the team's attention but what really got their attention was when he had the ball retrieved. Before looking at the ball he announced that the shoe polish would be found between the seam and a certain letter (like the d in Spaulding). Sure enough, the shoe polish dot was exactly where he said it was. Williams eye sight and ability to watch the ball come off the bat was his trademark. That kinda proved it.

WWII costs Williams four years that would have been in his prime. Also, at Fenway the right field fence required a much longer home run than Yankee stadium. Best hitter of all-time? Probably.
