I was on a business call and the guy said he just got word he passed away from an illness.

Ours isn't really saying anything different than what else is out there. Rough day for Gamecock nation. As I mentioned on Twitter, my first game as a young Gamecock was Petty's win over NMState which broke the streak, and my first bowl game was his final game beating OSU. Probably no one loomed larger in my 10-12 year old psyche than Petty.

Publisher's note from Caleb Alexander: I don't really have the power to do much here beyond a symbolic gesture, but the front page of Gamecock Scoop is going to wear mourning black for the rest of today in honor of the passing of Gamecock Great Phil Petty. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all affected by this morning's awful news.

He was never going to blow you away with his play but he was steady. You could count on him to not lose a game. I was a few years ahead of him in school and always thought we could do better at the QB position until he was no longer there. I appreciate what he did more and more the further those days are in the rear view.

Very good assessment. He reminded me of Jay Barker at Alabama. Of course Barker had a little more talent around him but like Barker Phil Petty was a game manager that made the most out of his skill set.

But to me the biggest mark of his talent is he entered our program with one win the first two seasons and left it 17-7 with two bowl victories in the last 2 years. That 2000 and 2001 teams could have easily been 10-2 or 11-1 with a couple of breaks. Those were the first Gamecock teams in my mind that had a chance to win every game since the 84 and 87 teams….and the first time we were doing it in the SEC.

Another indicator of his prowess was the extent to which we fell off once he left and Lou went in search of Tony Rice II, beginning with Corey Jenkins. It never worked out with him, Pinkins, or anyone else.

Pinkins was there. Remember the game against Bama when Squeaky threw a TD halfback pass that was dropped. I think I remember Pinkins starting that game. When they finally were forced to put an injured Petty in I thought he played well enough that he could have started. Could have beaten Bama for another time in Tuscaloosa. Of course I might be thinking of William & Mary again.

Man this is rough in general but I was at Carolina while Phil was there. Hung around him a few times. I'll be 43 in a few weeks. To go from 0-21 to winning the outback bowl was an absolute amazing time to go to school. I wish I would have told him thank you for all the fun he helped provide to the university then! One of those deaths that makes you think about your own life and the last 20 years.

That was the game that Kimrey started and Petty came in but couldn’t give it a full go bc of the injury in the fade game. I was there too and that play call and pass was a thing of beauty and when that drop happened you just kinda felt like it wasn’t our day.

That was a bad Bama team we should have beaten. If Petty were 100 percent I’m sure we would have won that one.

Petty was the type of player that everyone thought they could be but very few could actually be. Smart, disciplined, gritty and tough.

Phil Petty was definitely a part of that huge Turn Around for that 0 -21 Gamecock Squad. He Will Forever Be Remembered for His Contributions He Made to Our Great University. I also liked and Was Proud He Came From and Graduated from My High School Boiling Springs, South Carolina. I grew up there and my Parents were Still living There.

I remember talking about Phil Petty's Recruitment to USC with My Mother and friends. Really was Proud He Represented Boiling Springs.

43 is Young. RIP. Will be praying for his Wife, 2 Children and Others Sadly Impacted by This.

I'm stunned. That was sudden. Cause?
Copied off of Facebook:
To all of our friends, family and all of Phil Petty biggest supporters. I know there is a lot of speculation going around in the news outlets about my husbands cause of death. Not one person has reached out to ask and these reporters have ran off on what they believe or what anyone else has said. Phil was rushed to the hospital for internal bleeding and hemorrhaged. This is the truth in how I lost the love of my life and the father to our babies. Asking for many prayers to get us through these difficult days, weeks, months and years ahead. God bless all of you who have showed so much love and support and who have shared so many stories in his honor. Love Morgan, Sage and McCoy

I understand this is a difficult time for the family, but alot of the speculation would stop if they would share what happened, how it happened.

Aren't those symptoms? I thought it was kidney failure.
I'm no Dr., but I wouldn't think kidney failure would cause internal bleeding. I think it is most likely an aneurysm. I had a cousin who was about that same age and in very good physical condition to suddenly die from an aneurysm. They are hard to detect until they rupture and then its too late.

I really feel for the family, and it is not anybody's business what Mr. Petty succumbed to, but in this day and time, people always wonder. If you want to stop the speculation, just say what happened. Many times when there is no explanation, you can get an idea through who is listed as charities to donate money to in the obituary, I.e. the American Cancer Society, etc.

I died temporarily once from bleeding out b/c of a stomach ulcer I didn’t realize I had. I was 40, in great physical shape, felt bad one day, passed out in the shower and woke up in the ICU. Obviously I pulled through b/c my wife was home and heard me go down, but some aren’t as fortunate. I have no clue in Pettys case, but it does fit the wife’s info.
