Hello all. Gamecocks' offensive and defensive coordinators Marcus Satterfield and Clayton White scheduled to meet with the media starting at 1 p.m. today to evaluate the first few practices and what they've seen so far in spring ball.
Satterfield up first at 1 p.m. and White after him at around 1:30 p.m.
Updates will be in this post, so all you have to do is refresh.
Satterfield
--Said players and staff is excited together and they've thrown a lot at them early and guys are handling it well.
--Luke Doty is a natural passer and is absorbing the offense well. He's athletic and can run well and has been impressive. Colten Gauthier is handling the offense well, and Satterfield said it was a little shocking to see him grasp the offense so quickly. Jason Brown is transitioning from a spread offense to a more pro-style offense and trending in the right direction.
--He's really excited about the foundation talent-wise Muschamp laid and the staff's installed a lot early for the players to see how much they could absorb in a short amount of time and said guys are handling things really well. Mentioned Matt Rhule was in town for pro day and Satterfield was sitting down with him and was blown away by how much they had installed early.
--MarShawn Lloyd is living up to expectations from an on the field and off the field role. He's doing a great job in the locker room in terms of preaching what the coaches want him to preach.
--Said with Doty it's easy to see he's a natural passer. Compares him in terms of natural release to Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson.
--Jokes he'd love an offense like the Green Bay Packers but it's really hard to tell three practices in; said the scheme will be dictated on what the roster will look like once the season starts. Mentions priority number one will be running the football.
--Asked about players opting out and reconvening with the team, said it's a clean slate for everybody and he couldn't tell you who opted out last year. Said it doesn't matter to him and he's evaluating everyone on this spring and this offseason.
--He's experimenting with everything this spring right now just to see what they can do and do well then trim it down once they see the good and tailor the offense to that. There's no "magic number" in terms of plays you take into a game plan but said he usually carries about 50-60 plays into a game. Goal is to keep it under 100.
--Re-emphasizes the clean slate this spring and they're evaluating guys not on last year and what they are and can do this year. It's good to do it that way when evaluating talent and evaluating this roster.
--Sees a lot of speed and hard-workers in the receiver group. They're going the extra mile outside of practice and meetings to make sure they know the formations, splits, routes, etc. He's been really pleased with that group and there's a bunch of different body types.
"I've heard the rumblings of what they can't do but I'm really pleased with where they're going and what we can do."
--They want to get Kevin Harris and MarShawn Lloyd on the field at the same time. That group allows them to be very multiple and allows another layer some teams don't have.
--Offensive line is "big and physical." They have a lot of unique attributes. They're playing for each other and they're playing with a toughness right now, which is what Greg Adkins is preaching. There's only been one padded practice but they're excited about the group. There's about 7-8 guys they could play right now.
--Pleased with the tight end production. Said they've completed 46 balls to that position in three practices and the tight end spot is going to be a big piece of the offense.
--Players are involved and invited to offensive meetings to talk and watch the coaching staff break down film. It creates a great bond between coach and player and give players a chance to see what is going through a coach's mind while breaking down film.
--Said when evaluating players he's looking for someone with a high football IQ who can absorb and process information quickly. Said some guys might not have great ACT scores but have common sense smarts that help him go through reads and process things quickly. Guys who play slow tend to think more instead of just having natural anticipation.
--Said Luke Doty has shown the ability to move around and run and hurt teams with his legs. Right now the goal is to get him to not use his legs this offseason to help him continuing to develop him as a passer.
--Said 2022 recruiting is exciting right now. Said he understands they're recruiting guys who haven't seen this staff play yet. They feel really good about once they can get guys on campus and get them in front of the staff will help. Mentions just because a guy is committed somewhere doesn't mean he's going to end up there. Said they don't want to just put names on a commit page right now who don't fit what this coaching staff wants.
That's a wrap on Satterfield.
Clayton White
--Jordan Burch is a "physical specimen." He's flying around and it's easy to see when he gets on the football field. He's doing a good job taking coaching. RJ Roderick has done a good job and popped as well.
--Had a few guys banged up and guys who aren't here yet. They're managing with the guys on the roster. They have a bunch of guys who are asking to play multiple spots and that's an encouraging sign.
--Call the "rover" position a nickel or big nickel in the 4-2-5. They're looking for a guy who can cover slot receivers in the SEC and can blitz and fill the run game. Doesn't give any names but said there a few guys who can do that job.
--Tonka Hemingway is a "trending up" kind of player who's surprised the coaching staff a little bit with his production right now.
--Brad Johnson's flashed and has been very physical. Said he had the biggest hit of practice so far (against a receiver, so it doesn't count, he joked).
--Sherrod Greene and Brad Johnson are working inside. Debo Williams, Damani Staley, Mo Kaba, Rosendo Louis and Jahmar Brown are all in the linebacker room. The goal is to get 5-6 guys ready to go.
--Said about 60-70 percent of the defensive is installed. He wants to install as much as possible and treats each practice like a game with a game plan. Said he's become better as a coach because he's had to transition. First thing is spending a week on offensive formations then go through three-down and four-down formations then coverage calls.
--Talking about building up the secondary, said it starts off the field with disciplined. Said guys have to be disciplined on the back end in offseason work. Torian Gray's been great for that group so far. It's a tough job but he's doing a really great job of that. Said discipline is going to be huge. Said bad discipline and mistakes end up on the scoreboard if you're a DB.
--Said having thin numbers in the secondary is a challenge but the low numbers are giving a lot of guys reps and that's going to help in the long run as they get more guys on campus.
--Said most guys can go play safety but not everyone can play cornerback. Physical traits are more important at corner but you have to have a very smart safety on the back end that can understand formations. Mentions running backs, former high school quarterbacks and receivers make good safeties.
--Defense is very pleased with the way things are going right now in recruiting and the guys they're bringing in. Said they can't wait to see guys get on campus and see the facilities. Said some of the guys they're recruiting in the 2022 never really got a chance to come on campus.
--Coming to the SEC, said he had to get used to having big guys who can run and also be big. Said they have four or five guys who are big, can run and it's an impressive group. Mike Peterson has done well with that group. Said that's probably the best defensive group at that point and he's been very, very impressed.
--Offense has done a few good things this spring. It's making the defense look at some weaknesses they have, at least early. The offensive line is big and they have a handful of playmakers.
--Virtual visits are really good. The media group does a great job in terms of filming videos and presenting each group. Said they show that and talk for a while about questions and everything else.
--Defensive players don't come into defensive staff meetings, but said players are always coming up here and watching tape with position coaches. His message so far has been a guy should have his film graded and mistakes known so they can break it down at the start of the meeting.
That's a wrap today.
