The Gamecocks finished their last Saturday practice before the season starts today and a few players along with special teams/linebacker coach Coleman Hutzler spoke with the media afterwards. Here are a few notes from that with full coverage coming today and the rest of the week.

--Bryson Allen-Williams said he's been used as a linebacker and BUCK this preseason, saying he'll do a little bit of both this season. As a BUCK, he'll spend a lot of time rushing the passer with DJ Wonnum, but he'll also drop back in coverage some too. He said he's "widened" his skill set this off season to be able to do that.

--Allen-Williams raved about Aaron Sterling, saying he's going to make an impact early, and Wonnum said he's going to be playing and making an impact this year in the defensive line rotation.

--Javon Charleston, who was recently put on scholarship, said he's being rotated in with the first and second string during practice. Right now, he's working primarily at safety but is rotating in at nickel with Jam Williams.

--Wonnum said he had three sacks in the team's first scrimmages and feels he's gotten better over the course of camp. Right now, he said he feels more "explosive" coming off the ball in a three-point stance. He'll see time primarily at BUCK this year.

--Hutzler said the placekicker competition is still going on but the team is running out of time to name one with the season opener seven days away. Parker White and Alex Woznick are still competing pretty fiercely for that spot. At punter, Michael Almond and Joseph Charlton are still battling.

--As for the snapper and holder, Ben Asbury has separated himself as the long snapper replacement for Drew Williams and Danny Gordon is the holder with Almond also taking reps there.

--As for kick returner, Deebo Samuel is the starter there. Punt returns are mostly Chris Lammons and Rashad Fenton while Jam Williams and Shi Smith are also taking reps there. Lammons will get the start. Hutzler said the team charts everything when it comes to punt returns to determine who will start: fair catches, decision making, drops to name a few.

--Some starters will play on special teams this season, and Hutzler said he's extremely grateful Will Muschamp let's him do that. Said it's an everyone mentality right now.

--He's been pleased with Sherrod Greene and Eldridge Thompson's progress this camp as they try to add linebacker depth. They have to keep working with them, but they're improving in the mental game this offseason.
