SCDOT, (moou grads), continues to kill drivers near gaffney…

And it seems it would be obvious to anyone with a shred of sense that this chute system was a disaster waiting to happen. Whoever implemented it should be fired.

People in Cherokee County don’t use I-85…is that your argument? Any county wants people to stop, shop, and eat. Is that not true of your county as well?
Maybe I typed too fast. Someone posted that Cherokee County should have complained to the state about the I-85 construction. My argument is that the county didn’t care. Why should they care?

Because no county wants a road construction death trap within their boundaries, or I don’t think they would.

In my estimation, "counties" are not sentient beings, but rather the individuals who make decisions within them are guided by either morality or corruption. Not sure the status in this particular scenario.

Yeah, it's an option depending on which side of Greenville I'm visiting. But, it's longer time wise, how much longer I'm not sure. I'll have to time it the next time I drive that route to Greenville.
Is 276 an option?

When working it was basically a toss up. All depended on time of day, going or coming. ie, avoided interstate @ 8Am or 5pm.

In any scenario that is a state project, funded and contracted by the state, the county and its decision makers have little to no input. Any morality or corruption question cannot be directed at the county level decision makers. They do not exist. If you wish to raise moral or corruption issues, have at it, but at the state level.

Long before my time paving & corruption became synonyms. It has its own trickle down mechanism.

The simpletons at the SCDOT amaze us all. On 85, and on 20 below Columbia, they split the lanes into singles bordered on each side by concrete barriers. If something happens, car loses power, blows a tire, there is no where to go. Traffic simply backs up for miles and miles. But if a car loses control, a truck doesn't allow enough space to stop, once again, there is no avenue to avoid trouble. Ignorance.

And one thing I noticed early on with 85. They have all of these signs posted telling trucks to stay in the left lane to keep traffic flowing at a decent rate. But the trucks have basically ignored the sign, use both lanes and choke traffic down to whatever slow speed they can generate to get up the hill. Good idea, in theory. But maybe put some law enforcement out there to enforce this and things might run a little smoother.

I'll let someone else confirm, but I'm pretty sure the main issue area of 85 is to the north/east of the 221 exit. So if you're getting on 85 south from 221 and heading towards Spartanburg you should be fine.

HOWEVER, you'll need to take regular 85 all the way to I-26 if that's the way you're going. Business 85 is closed around Hearon Circle/New Cut Road. They're replacing several bridges. When I saw the announcement, I thought to myself that will be a headache for a few months. Nope, the closure is planned for TWO YEARS. Ugh.
^^this^^

South of 221 you're gonna be fine. That's pretty much the line that I use routing my delivery drivers.

Another thing that I do is avoid I-85 as much as I can Greenville to Spartanburg, just because of the massive amount of traffic. Sometimes it's inevitable, but try to avoid it as much as possible. If I have something going to the Spartanburg area or north, I always route through the country through Woodruff and get on I-26 north from there. It's a few more miles, but a much easier (and safer) drive.

FitsNews says it's because contractors want it that way: https://www.fitsnews.com/2021/07/17/interstate-85-in-south-carolina-is-a-death-trap-coroner-alleges/

So you say whoever signed off should be fired. But if they went with another bid that wasn't as cheap, someone else would say they should be fired because they wasted money and weren't efficient.

I travel through Cherokee and Spartanburg counties regularly but take 29 to see the towns and sometimes eat.

But, you have to think of the workers as well. The chutes are more to protect them and it is an effective way for the work to get done without closing lanes. The ultimate fault is on the negligence of drivers who are busy doing other things than…driving. I don’t like it either, but the work must be done.

Alabama went through the exact same for years working on 20 and is beautiful now. We will get there.
