I am sick of this penalty.....10% are warranted, but does the guy really need to be thrown out of the game.....that ole miss call against louisville a few minutes ago was awful imo....this rule needs to be revisited....i get why the ncaa is doing it, but there has to be a better way......just my .02 cents.....edit...now louisville just about killed corral and that was targeting....probably deserved, but that wasn't even remotely close to the other penalty....i thought they took his head off

lol…I seriously came to start the exact same thread. No joke. This one on the Ole Miss QB, the defenders we’re already going to make the tackle before he started to slide.

During the Wisconsin vs. Penn State game on Saturday one of the play by play guys was ranting about this. He had a good point I think about ejecting the player. Sure, penalize the guy, but kicking him out of the game is too much. Maybe they could alter the rule and eject a guy if he has a second targeting penalty.

Targeting has the potential of permanent damage or getting the player hit out of the game. It was viewed that disqualification was an appropriate penalty. 15 yards not comparable if a player gets hurt. In other words, don’t do it.

It should’ve changed last year. I can’t believe players are still getting ejected for it. Teams should just take one for the team and refuse to play a game until they allow the players to simply get a penalty with no ejection. It would change real fast. 3 ejections so far in this game and there is still 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

is it about player safety or is it about increasing offense?

They need to show the replay at full speed at least once. It’s not easy to miss a helmet that’s moving up or down so fast.

Who made the call on Ole Miss? No one even threw a flag. Some duffus in the booth watched it in slow mo to notice it.
That's a problem and over the top imo.
Some of these calls are justified tho. That said, kinda getting tired of hearing announcers coming to the defense of the of the ones making the hit. No need to justify them at the expense of the targeted most of the time.

Since it is early in the season they are going to make examples out of many players.

Yeah trying to tackle an elite athlete is easy. Especially when he too drops his head at the very last second.
Just saying refraining isn’t as easy as some of you think it is.

I wish they'd take things into account like if the ball carrier lowers himself it may put the defender in a no win situation on the fly.
This no tolerance path they seem to be on is wrong for the game. It not all black and white.

This is my complaint all along. These plays are happening at top speed. In many (most?) circumstances, something changes at the last last second and there's nothing the defender can do. That's why they have to review them all in slow motion because it's so hard to tell in most cases. I couldn't tell you the # of times I've seen a defender going for the tackle when the offense player changes his trajectory at the last second, resulting in targeting contact. In the Ole Miss game last night. the Ole Miss QB was running and 2 defender lowered down to make a tackle and the Ole Miss QB slid at the last second, resulting in the helmet-to-helmet contact. It puts the defender at a distinct disadvantage if they have wait to the last nanosecond to go for the tackle.

For Pete's sake, how many holding penalties could they call if they reviewed every single snap and looked at every offensive lineman to evaluate for the textbook definition of holding?

I think they should bring the halo rule back for punt returns. Those punt returners get blown up

Very few players get ejected for targeting multiple times per year. So clearly, most of the targeting calls are from players playing fast.

I'm ok with a 15 yard penalty, but the ejection has to go for a first offense. I would love to see college football implement a FIFA like yellow card/red card system.

I'm afraid we are actually moving further away from a system like that, which would be a good system imo. My concern first started when an intentional grounding was called earlier. Yeah he was in the pocket when he threw it OB but a case could be made it was a broken route. They then said they didnt want refs trying to get in the head of the QB to figure intent. They are taking judgement calls away from the refs. It may have been the right call idk, but it was disturbing to me that every penalty is going to have the book thrown at it and the days of warnings that used to be fitting to some seem to be ending.

Just a thought on the grounding call. So it’s ok to throw the ball into the third row even if it’s 25 yards over the players head but to misfire on a busted route gets a penalty. The receiver on the busted route was wide open

I would like to see targeting called against the offense. If it's all about "player safety". How many times have I seen the ball carrier lead with THEIR helmet?

The penalty has changed the way the game is played. It has pretty much eliminated the "flying spear" tackles. But it's time to change the rule - an ejection shouldn't be warranted on these football plays. If something is egregious, sure. But a single play like most of these shouldn't change the rest of a game or even the next game.

From what I saw, I dont think the ball was thrown too far off the sideline. Looked to me like the QB was throwing to a spot at a timing route and the receiver cut the other way. I could be wrong but that's the way it looked to me. If that was the case, intentional grounding just doesnt seem the right call but I guess that's what you're gonna get if they dont want refs to assume anything.
