July 8 afternoon update (Chris): Murphy picked UNC during his ceremony this afternoon.

As we've said, this is one we'll continue to monitor.

July 8 Update (Chris):
In the lead-up to Myles Murphy's 3:00 p.m. announcement today in Greensboro, our team at GamecockCentral.com has continued to work the phones.

As we laid out in our Sunday afternoon update, more pieces of information than not were pointing positively towards South Carolina at that time.

We have not heard anything on decision day that directly contradicts that information, but we can say that Murphy has told different folks different things within the past 24 hours. So again, North Carolina could hardly be classified as a surprise - some connected parties believe that will be the pick based on feedback from Murphy. Others, based on recent info that we laid out, believe it's South Carolina.

We can't rule out Murphy legitimately changing his mind multiple times as of late, nor can we rule out him deliberately throwing out red herrings.

Put it this way: If it's not the Gamecocks today, there will have been great pains taken to conceal the intentions from many folks. We can say with 100 percent certainty that Murphy has given people conflicting accounts of what he will ultimately do.

Also worth remembering here: multiple sources intimately familiar with this recruitment have told us that no matter what happens at the podium today, that Murphy's process will not be complete.

Murphy's already told at least one college staff not expected to land his verbal commitment today that he's planning a visit this fall. And multiple staffs involved during his recruitment feel that the door will stay open for, at a minimum, whichever program out of North Carolina/South Carolina that does not land him today.

So no matter what happens today, perhaps don't light the victory cigar - or throw in the towel - just yet.

July 7 Update (Chris):
We are now less than 24 hours away from 4-star defensive lineman Myles Murphy's announcement at Dudley High in Greensboro.

Our staff at GamecockCentral.com has been working to gather the very latest in advance of that much-anticipated choice. We have already outlined that the two programs carrying the most significant buzz heading in are South Carolina (the longtime frontrunner) and North Carolina, which has gained some legitimate steam in recent days.

Let's begin the meat of this update by saying that it would be naive on our part to outright dismiss the North Carolina stuff based on what was said and where it originates.

Often in a recruitment such as this one, multiple involved parties are being given positive feedback, and there's certainly reason to believe that's happened here. That leaves us to sort through the information and pick out which school has more of that talk in its favor and which bits are the most trustworthy. While there's been some information that has legitimized UNC's position with Murphy, as we laid out Friday, South Carolina also had its encouraging signs in its favor. It would be fair to say that since that Friday update, that those signs are still there - and have increased.

All that is said to get to the point: We won't be changing our pick from South Carolina.

GamecockCentral.com plans to cover Murphy's announcement tomorrow.

July 5 Update (Chris):
We have continued to closely monitor Murphy's recruitment as different bits of information, often conflicting, have come in to us.

We want to reiterate that we have heard some legitimate, behind the scenes buzz on North Carolina that we laid out in our July 4 update.

It's also worth nothing that since that update, in the last 24 hours, we have heard more that one bit of information that sounds encouraging for South Carolina.

Clearly there are, at the minimum, some mixed signals going out here. That makes it difficult to sort out. Based on where the South Carolina stuff is coming from, we think there's a good bit of validity to it. It's a complicated situation because of the other information, and that means we'll be tracking this one down to the wire, in all likelihood.

Everyone stay buckled up, and we'll continue passing along what we hear.

July 4 Update (Chris):
*** Since our last update on four-star North Carolina defensive lineman Myles Murphy, we have been continually digging for where things stand leading up to his Monday decision.

We previously noted that the primary concerns here for South Carolina were Alabama, for obvious reasons, as well as North Carolina. Mack Brown’s new staff in Chapel Hill is taking great pains to make a splash on the recruiting trail, and there’s a flat-out obligation to get guys like Murphy in the boat from the home state.

South Carolina’s long been in a good spot for Murphy, but behind the scenes there has been indeed been some buzz and talk for the Tar Heels. That said, the information is still conflicting and difficult to sort out. Tuesday afternoon brought us the first seemingly legitimate info, more than one piece, that Murphy told some folks that UNC could be the move. Of course, the same can be said for South Carolina, including in recent days.

Complicating matters is the fact that even Florida, which by all indications is running fourth for Murphy, has received positive feedback in the last several days. Alabama’s felt it is in the game, too.

In short, we just aren’t sure at this point. The picture could clear up between now and Monday, and in all likelihood it will. We’ll bring another update once we can. Just know that North Carolina certainly wouldn’t be a surprise at this point, given what we know. If that scenario played out, the question would be: is it over?

In one of our recent updates, I opined that we knew how far Greensboro was from Columbia. That’s still true, but the rental car is not booked at this point.

July 1 Update (Chris):
South Carolina has long been considered the front-runner for Murphy, whose stock has continued to be on the rise with college coaches as well as in the recruiting industry.

The Gamecock staff has hosted Murphy on campus multiple times for unofficial visits as well as an official visit. USC seemed to quickly rise to a position of prominence upon offering, and we let our subscribers know at that point that he would be a priority target for the staff.

It became clear that Murphy was not going to extend the process into December or next February during the spring period, when he said he was closing in on trying to make a choice. Official visits were scheduled, and those went to South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, and North Carolina. It seemed as if those latter two were the ones that the Gamecocks would have to sweat a bit. Alabama's Nick Saban typically covets defensive linemen with Murphy's size, versatility, and skill set - indeed, the Crimson Tide have had Murphy as a take and impressed him on the visit. North Carolina has attempted to sell proximity, past defensive line production, and Murphy's certainly a big need as Mack Brown tries to restore the program.

Entering the first official visit to South Carolina, things looked good for the Gamecocks. Ditto for the feedback we received after that final trip to Columbia. That just meant that USC would have to survive the competing official visits in advance of Murphy's announcement, which is scheduled for July 8.

Wes Mitchell and I both have had forecasts in for South Carolina.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
