They dropped the "lady" part several years ago. Go to the official site and look in the women's ball media guide under nickname. All Carolina women's teams are just "Gamecocks." The only schools in sec that still use "lady" are Tennessee, UGA and LSU.

If you still use it, you are either uniformed, ignorant or simply being disrespectful to Coach Staley who requested the change.

Maybe you should inform the TV stations.

Dang, pepsi I never remembered that. But, I have never followed women's sports very much until this year.

Absolutely correct! Fighting roosters are called gamecocks, not hens. By the way, if the UGA women's team is called Lady Bulldogs, wouldn't that make them b*tches?

Have you heard any commentator in the tournament call them "Lady Gamecocks?" No you haven't. If a dumb station in South Carolina can't read the media guide, that's their problem not mine. They are either ignorant (most likely) uninformed or being disrespectful

"Lady Gamecocks". lady Gamecocks. lady Gamecocks. lady Gamecocks.

Lady Gamecocks. Lady Gamecocks. Lady Gamecocks. Infinity

Me too, Pepsi. And I'll call them the "Lady G's" probably forever. **

GOCOCKS! BEATMSU! BEATND!

That is correct, though the change happened many years before Dawn became our coach. They've been simply, "Gamecocks" for at least 20 years now.

I support ALL Gamecocks! They are ladies and I don't see any problem in calling them anything that is 'respectful!'

First female South Carolina basketball team that competed in college was the Pullets in 1923. Boy, oh boy, are there a lot of jokes in that one! Pullet and Cocks........ I should just stop.

Actually - there's a fourth option - That we don't give a damn what's printed in the media guide.

Sincerely,

If we did that, we wouldn't have stupid nit-picking 5hit to bitch about.

Most people are probably using that phrase simply to specifically refer to the women's basketball team as distinguished from the men's team.

Generally speaking though, "Lady" in the phrase Lady Gamecocks can be taken to mean "something less than real Gamecocks." That is why the university stopped using "lady" years ago, but to their and every athlete and coaches credit, no one makes a big deal out of it. Everyone is appreciative of the support.

Our women's basketball team (why not use that phrase to get specific?) are Gamecocks in every sense of the word. We don't have "gentlemen" Gamecocks or "lady" Gamecocks--just Gamecocks. I think we are all proud of them and what they've accomplished. We might could show the appreciation by dropping "Lady," but it's all good.

Go Cocks!

Being from the "old" school I consider being called a"Lady" is the highest of compliments and one that makes me proud when identified that way! Regardless of what anyone "wants" to be called the "women's basketball team" is ALL female - that's the gender they were created to be! I always refer to this team I'm SO proud of as the "ladies", "girls", etc. to separate them from the "men's basketball team" I refer to as the "guys", etc. When I'm cheering for them I always say "Go Cocks" because they ALL Gamecock teams. Rather silly topic imo!!

^ ^ ^ The best post of the thread ^ ^ ^.

Their our female athletes and we love-em.

Anyway that we good supportive fans express our fondness toward these females, whether it by "Ladies", "Lady's", "Lady G's", "Women" or "Girls" - we all know it's because they have risen to the top of importance right now by our fans and any type of way we express it in order to separate them from the crowd... even an idiot would know it's "expressed in love/fondness".

There really needs to be some way to refer to girl's teams vs guy's teams. It is so aggravating to read a headline that refers to "Gamecocks" and not know who it is referring to. I have read articles in the past where I read one or two paragraphs before I even realized they were talking about a girl's team, when, at the time I was not interested in reading about girls' sports. I don't see anything offensive about referring to them as "Lady" Gamecocks. At least you know who the hell is being talked about. Just for brevity I personally refer to them as "Girl-Cocks." Kinda catchy, don't you think?

"Jumbo Shrimp" is not an oxymoron. A shrimp is name for certain species of crustacean and the size of individual specimens vary.

Maybe we should just have one basketball team then since women and men are always equal in everything. The best 14-15 players make the team and the rest lose their scholarships. You okay with that op?

Staley never requested a change. It's been that way for a long time.

It's also not disrespectful to call a lady, well, a LADY.

Either way, if you say the basketball team, 9/10 times someone will think of the men. Even though the women's team has had success, they still need to be identified when conversing.

As for me, I call them, "The Girls", but I suppose you'll tell me that it is disrespectful also.

Are you fricking kidding me??!!! Some people will bitch about the most minimal things. It must really suck to be anal like you OP...

I'm so thankful for this thread. I usually wait until the gatekeepers of correct speech inform me of what words I can and cannot say.
