Urban Meyer

You are an ignoramous sir/maam. By any gender....an idiot. I'm a lifelong Gamecock.......End of that story. I assume you know our football history.

Chapter 2: My becoming increasingly fed up with the lack of talent from the top of our hiring boards/powers that be to the actual football coaching staff over the last 6-7 years has absolutely nothing to do with elitist wanna be, band wagon, power hungry, the program is never wrong, entitled to the tilt groups that you speak of. I have gone from partially coercing to full out demanding that talented, capable individuals occupy these positions. Whether you're part of Beamer's family or not that has invaded this site, or a long time regular - my new stance is not changing...whether you like it or not.

Clemson fans, Tennessee fans, VIRGINIA TECH fans go right along with the UNC basketball and NY Yankee fans....but empirically I, like no true Gamecock, is like them in any way.
It's hilarious you say gator fans are "more entitled and out of touch than ever." Dude they won two national championships in two years and two more in basketball during the same time frame. They have a reason to feel entitled! WE DON'T! Yet here you are..😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Don't think Harbaugh will leave Michigan....he's already done the NFL thing and was pretty darn successful...other than his personality.

What will be interesting is the Notre Dame promotion....they haven't had a lot of success with that or with hiring an inexperienced coach. From all I've read, that would be UM's dream job.
Is UM Catholic??

Just askin' 'cause I kinda agree with you in regards to that being a "dream" job for the Urban Mayor.

Depending on how Marcus Freeman does next year and the "feel" he gives the Catholic powers that be up in South Bend as far as where that program is heading after next season, then it may very well end up being a mutually beneficial move for both parties (i.e., the urban mayor and the South Bend catholic powers that be).

In fact, if I had to pick urban's next endeavor, then South Bend would be the best bet IMHO!

Just sayin' now. Not a certain pick on my part here. Rather just a bit of "breeze shootin'" on my end!! =;-p

UM is so Catholic he's named after a pope. 😉

Yes, he is Catholic. Went to Catholic school throughout his youth and to Catholic-influenced University of Cincinnati.

Urban will NEVER get hired by Notre Dame. That ship sailed many, many years ago. He had his chance but couldn't get what he wanted so he passed. Irish Nation is thrilled with Marcus Freeman and Tommy Rees and will really be even happier with a new OL coach and WR coach after the bowl game.

I know they are happy with Freeman....I was simply commenting on their historical success of promoting from within. I have no clue what Meyer's relationship is with UND. It has always seemed that the timing wasn't right for one or the either to even have discussed it.

Urban wanted ND to make a lot of academic concessions and the admin wouldn't do it. He was on Holtz's staff at one point and he mentioned ND was his dream job but that was so long ago. His behavior has been so disgusting since his days at Florida that there is no way they would ever hire him.

Freeman is a stand up guy. He is also young and energetic. Just like Beamer. I think the Irish and the Gamecocks have made a couple of really strong hires and I am excited to see them both be wildly successful.

I don’t feel sorry for him, and he made his bed…blah blah…..but IF he ever came here, with his staff, and his players and IIIIFFFFFFFF the P. T. B. miraculously fell into a sinkhole, he would win an MNC in 5 years. Dude can coach CFB, no doubt about it, and I feel like he’s not nearly as over the hill as Holtz was (duh!) and SOS was, even though they’re close in age to what Steve O was when came here. He’ll be back, maybe Pitino style/level

I think you are off your meds again. Wanting better for the Gamecock football program has absolutely nothing to do with entitlement. What I think most programs would feel is pride, gratitude and fondness for such a run...for the coaches, players, admin who helped build those groups that were able to accomplish those feats.

Getting rid of coaches after 3-4 years because they aren't winning NCs is the definition of entitlement. You guys talk about giving coaches time.....well that's two coaches in a row they've fired. First...McElwain was given 2.5 years and won 65% of his games with his base as an SEC conference member, and next they gave Mullen (kinda 3.5 years) but lets call it 4 years and he's at 70% with same situation. Florida fans and powers that be that skipped over being impatient to downright stupidity. If these guys were back to back first and second season sub .500...I could understand. Gainesville elite is just shuffling through talented coaches and spitting them out since SOS left there. Facts.

Speaking of needing medication, how do you square this with the fact that you'd like to fire coach before we ever even hired him or even after one year with a horrible horrible roster?

This is exactly the crux of my problem with you.

I don't disagree that Florida fans are short-sighted. I live right here with them I tell them all the time. It just astounds me that you can't see the same in yourself. You are not some sort of savant or coach whisperer. You can't see the future.

You have a better than average chance of being right that Beamer will fail miserably here. That doesn't make your desire to not give him a chance anymore fair or reasonable. If I were going to lay money on any coach being successful or unsuccessful I would always put my money on the latter. Unless the coach's name was Saban or Belichick I suppose.

Again, it's absolutely hilarious that you're accusing Florida fans of exactly the thing you're doing yourself. Even worse they gave those guys at least two or three years.

So, the crux of your problem with me is that I am 100% confident that the hiring powers made a poor decision, and that I stand by that stance? Also....once a month or two on the job, when I found out SB wouldn't be bringing Air Raid or any personnel with him I was even more incensed.
I "square" it because we aren't in a situation where our coach wins 70% of his games. He never will at USC or anywhere else. So...it's not about being right. It's about knowing the highly likely outcome (as you point out and agree with) and choosing to say "I don't want this. Why don't we go down the less bumpy road".

Pretty much. I think you need to give the guy a chance. And I'm 100% certain that's what's going to happen and I want you to be on board with it. I know you're a fan and I want to see you act like one. I want to see you support the university you love with all your heart even if they've made a decision you don't agree with. I want you to accept the fact that you don't have the final say and pitching a fit about it now is serving no purpose. So you would be okay with the hire if Beamer won 70% of his games? If we win the bowl game we'll be pretty close to that. And again it's pretty unfair considering the mess he came in to. This is Year zero.

Like I said chances are, only because it's always the more likely outcome, Beamer will fail here like almost everyone else has. Like almost every coaching hire at every school across the country does. That doesn't make you right about him. That's just a testament to just how hard a task it is. But it goes against every fiber in my being to chant it like it's your mantra of destiny. Stop. Shane Beamer deserves your support just like every coach we ever hired has.

But I know you're incapable of being fair about this because you didn't get your way so you're having a fit about it. Honestly it's childish.

We don’t have the players to run an AR offense. Makes no sense to install it when we wouldn’t be able to run it.

Image has taken a major hit...kicking players and all. Thing that doesn't bode well for Urban is that his tactics likely wouldn't work well in an NIL/transfer portal college football world. It's basically the pros now. Players aren't stuck with you any longer. Not like he needs the
I believe kicking needs to be defined - you’re warming up on the ground and a coach nudges you with his foot vs literally kicking the crap out of you is a huge difference. I’m not a Urban fan but I call HS on the kicking incident.

Like leaving the ACC 50+ years ago. I had second thoughts about the decision the moment I saw the 1971-72 hoops schedule.

If I was that upset with the decision to leave, I would have dissed any and everything USC back then, and not looked back. Obviously, I didn't do that (it's admittedly hard for a 10-year-old to do that).

My solace is wishing we can/will schedule as many regular season contests in as many sports as we can with those institutions who were in the league at the time of our departure. WBB has done a good job of that this year - NCSU, Clemron, Maryland, and Dook.

But back to the original topic.

For those who dislike the Beamer hire, would you rather be "right," i.e., Beamer doesn't get us back to 10+ win seasons, is shown the door in a few years and we have to start over again, or do you want him to succeed, and we get to sustained 10+ wins per season in 2-3 years?

You might think he's going to fail (a fair opinion), but thinking he's going to fail and wanting him to are separate ideas.

Half of this is rational....half isn't. You're description of my outlook on Beamer being childish is wrong. I WANT him to succeed...I just know 100% that he won't have the type of success I (personally) want after 3 years here. It has nothing to do with what he "inherited" and stop using year "zero". He inherited a better situation than the be-deviled WM. He has been on this job for a whole year now. Beamer had 8 COMPLETE months before his first season practice and almost nine months before his first game. He had time to bring in transfer portal guys, 2 recruiting classes and was in charge of hiring a coaching staff.

IF Beamer, after 3 years, is winning 60% of his games I will be happy....NOT 58%....60% minimum. But if you're a fan of the Gamecock football program...you know Florida and Auburn situations we saw this year don't happen normally... so we can't count on that re-occuring. I think my being eagerly optimistic for nearly 40 years like the rest of you SOBs has been the childish thing. We really need to re-adjust our priorities to change the course of the future of this program. I'm doing my part.

It's not an either or with whether we will be "right" or not. I don't give a D about being right. I WANT him to succeed. I want the football program to be where we NEED it to be. But, expecting this to happen, in the situation and conference we're in....you might as well expect to win the lottery too. Crap in one hand and wish in the other...see which one comes true/fills up first. That is our current status.

The point of not wanting him here is we know we will be starting over in 3-5 years no matter what....and we've just wasted an entire decade. I won't be on here talking about "I told you so". I will be championing the best and brightest and talking up what direction I hope our beloved program should be going. At what point, though, does the program remain "beloved"? I've questioned that some in these last 5-6 years.

I appreciate your honesty. And your stand - you want SB to win, but are convinced he won't. I can respect that.

I don't have a strong feeling regarding Beamer one way or the other regarding his potential success at USC. I do believe he will endear himself to the fans as a human being better than WM did - of course being "that" nice of a guy has nothing to do with winning championships.
