WBB: Five Things to Watch - Vanderbilt
Tip is at 7 on the SEC Network. I think 90% of tonight's crowd is currently wandering the concourse.
Tonight is South Carolina's "We Back Pat" game. Players are wearing special "We Back Pat" warmup shirts. The Gamecocks are also debuting their new fauxback uniforms: white pinstrips on garnet with a script name across the front.
All Gamecocks are present and warming up.
The design on the new shorts makes it look like players are wearing garnet short shorts with white leggings underneath.
Dunk contest time. LA's two hander misses. Saxton and Feagin have their one-handed tries bounce out.
Zia Cooke is being held out tonight with a lower left leg injury. She was shooting fine in warmups. That means once again South Carolina is missing at least two players (Cooke and Raven Johnson), and has had at least two players out for every game this season. Also, Cooke's consecutive games started streak ends at 82, tied with Aliyah Boston for second all-time. Tiffany Mitchell has the program record with 103 consecutive starts.
Gamecock starters: Henny, LeLe, Beal, Saxton, Boston.
Before the starting lineups, Henny is awarded her 1,000 point club basketball.
Gamecocks win the toss and we are underway.
I know it's been a while since she played a lot, but LeLe is still going to drive baseline.
Except when she spots up for a three, just the second of her career. Then she hits another layup. 7 points already for LeLe, Gamecocks lead 11-3. Timeout Vandy.
LeLe had 9 points all season and two made field goals. She already has three baskets tonight.
Moore banks in a three. Lucky>Good
South Carolina leads 19-8 after 1Q. USC is already +7 rebounding.
Littleton opens the 2Q with a three. Vandy got away with doubling off Beal in the first, it won't work against Littleton.
LA drains a corner three. And then Cardoso converts a three-point play. South Carolina leads 28-10 and is on the verge of putting this one away.
Boston set a screen for Littleton, everyone went with Littleton, and Boston cut to the basket for a layup. Hint: stay with Boston.
Gamecocks lead 36-14 at the media timeout. Boston's double-double streak could be in jeopardy because she's not going to play much in the second half. She has 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block.
Rivers is currently running point, alongside LeLe, Beal, Boston, and Cardoso. She's doing a decent job, too. Gamecocks lead 40-14 and Feagin checks in for Boston for the final minute.
Gamecocks lead 42-15 at halftime. LeLe has 9, included an ankle-break stepback jumper to end the half. Cardoso also has 9, and Boston has 6/3/3. USC is shooting 57.7% and holding Vandy to 22.2%
I think maybe South Carolina got tired of hearing about all their flaws for the last 8 days.
Same starters for the second half. Boston gets a steal, and then Saxton and LeLe run the drill where you get the ball to the rim by passing back and forth.
Boston is inching closer to the double-double. She has 8 and 7. It's hard to get many offensive rebounds when your team is shooting 58%.
Gamecocks lead 52-20 at the media timeout. Boston has 8 and 9, plus 3 assists, 3 steals, and a block. LeLe has 14 points. Her career-high is 22, set against Vanderbilt when she was a freshman starting in place of an injury A'ja Wilson.
Ten rebounds for Boston. She just needs another basket.
Bella LaChance lobs in a floater at the buzzer to cut South Carolina's lead to 60-22. Boston has 8 points and 10 rebounds. They were trying to get her another basket at the end of the 3Q.
They tried, they really tried to get Boston her tenth point. But she finally takes a seat. And then comes right back in for the inbounds. She gets it, drives, takes contact and scores. The crowd goes nuts. Everybody knew why she checked back in.
Cardoso was at the scorers table to check back in before Boston's shot hit the bottom of the net. FT is good. Boston will finish with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.
Vandy's 26 points would be tied for the 5th fewest ever allowed by the Gamecocks, and the fewest by a power five opponent.
South Carolina beats Vanderbilt 85-30.
