WEDNESDAY: Quick note here...

There's a lot of buzz/smoke in the coaching industry on Paul Jackson and this position.

MONDAY: Here’s the latest we have gathered on the Gamecock’s open head strength and conditioning coach position…

We still have not been able to define any sort of clear-cut frontrunner here. It’s worth keeping in mind that South Carolina does not need to be in a huge rush here; the team’s winter workouts will not begin until January. That said, it’s entirely possible that Will Muschamp could tab someone sooner if he finds the right guy. We have heard some behind the scenes talk that Muschamp may be looking to tab a younger candidate if possible, but there are more experienced names that have come up as well that are also quality.

It’s entirely possible that some NFL guys get more into the mix once the season is over because there has been some back-channel checking on some guys in that regard; teams have at least three weeks remaining in the 2019 campaign.

Another name that we have heard connected to the opening is Kansas State’s Chris Dawson, who is more of a veteran figure with 20-plus years of head experience. His situation appears quite stable in Manhattan, and he’s on his tenth season on the K-State staff. On the surface, it seems not as likely that a move would be in the works here. We have heard the name, so we’re passing it along.

While we have not received any indications that any talks have advanced to date, we do know that some in the coaching industry have recommended former Gamecock head strength and conditioning coach Joe Connolly here.

Now at Arizona State, Connolly was in his post at Carolina from 2012-2015. That 2012 team squad was arguably the best in program history, and from 2012-2014 the Gamecocks went 29-10 and outscored opponents by a total of 205 points in the second half of games. Under Connolly’s direction the program decreased knee, shoulder, and ankle injuries by close to a 50 percent clip and hamstring injuries also dropped significantly over the course of four seasons. Connolly was on staff when Will Muschamp arrived in December 2015 and was not retained since Muschamp brought over Jeff Dillman from Florida, but perhaps one to file away.

Wes Mitchell and I have both given our subscribers the name of recent Ole Miss head man Paul Jackson. New Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin brought in his own guy from FAU, and so Jackson was not retained in Oxford. We continue to hear there appears to be mutual interest here for the open position in Columbia as it pertains to Jackson.

We'll keep everyone posted as to what we hear going forward...thanks for being a member!
