*** One prospect who appears to be a priority in the 2020 class for South Carolina is North Carolina’s Desmond Evans, a four-star defensive end the Gamecock staff has been able to lure to campus several times already.
Evans was back on Saturday watching USC take down Chattanooga at home, and noted that he has been keeping a consistent line of communication with the Gamecock staff.
Here are Evans’ thoughts on the game:
“South Carolina was great. The environment was good. A lot of people were there and I can see myself playing there.”
*** Class of 2020 offensive lineman Avery Jernigan hit South Carolina’s radar very early and has been on campus numerous times whether for game visits, social events, or a summer camp stop in Columbia.
The Peach State product was on hand once again on Saturday night to take in the Gamecocks’ win over Chattanooga. Jernigan was joined on the trip by members of his family, as well as his high school offensive line coach and his family.
Jernigan has a strong relationship with offensive line coach Eric Wolford, no doubt one of the key reasons for the Gamecocks being in Jernigan’s top two along with Auburn. The two had another productive sit-down for about 20 minutes on Saturday. Auburn’s small-town feel has the Tigers in the mix here too, but Jernigan told GamecockCentral.com on Sunday that being around the South Carolina program always makes him feel at home.
He’s looking to make a decision sometime prior to next season.
*** Wes Mitchell spoke with UCF defensive back commitment Dequanteous Watts, who was recently offered by the Gamecocks and visited Columbia on Saturday as well.
Check out the full interview here.
*** USC jumped in early on 2020 lineman Jah-marien Latham out of Alabama, and he also made his way to campus on Saturday for the game.
Alabama has begun to show more interest in Latham, and that would ostensibly be a significant offer, should the Tide ultimately step forward with one.
UPDATE on Latham - Bama offered, and he committed.
*** As Wes documented before the game, Virginia Tech running back commitment Tajh Gary was unable to make his scheduled trip to Columbia due to breaking his femur. I checked in and was told that Gary’s recovery should be a 4-6 month time frame. The leg will not be in a cast; he can use crutches as his doctors want him moving around on it to help accelerate his healing.
We would still anticipate Gary making an official visit to Columbia in the future; USC’s heavily in the mix here.
