most doctor's offices, as compared to "way back", also have onsite labs, ekg machines, x-ray equipment, and other options that doctors "way back" simply didn't have at their office. so instead of having to send their patient to another doctor, or a lab, or somewhere else, they simply do the tests at their own office.

Most patients also demand a higher level of service from their family doctors than our grandparents did. If a doctor 50 years ago needed to take a lab, they might do it on the house-call and you might here back in a week or two. Today, you can get immediate results in most cases and that is what patients expect.

I'm old enough to remember when my doctor would barter with me... his services for mine. Both of us benefited greatly. As a contractor in my younger days I'd do work on his house and he in turn would give me heavily discounted rates and enough sample medications where i would never have to fill a prescription. Went on that way for a decade or so until he was threaten by our govt to stop. They were saying he can't charge anyone less than what the govt would pay out for medicaid. Basically saying that no one is allowed a better deal than the govt. No one. Period. I'll never forget my doctor informing me our deal was over. He was genuinely sorry. I mean tearfully so.
