Consumer goods were not really touched in that a lot of companies loaded up on goods in February and March in preparation. Then any good that shipped prior to April 2 wasn’t tariffed. It takes 20+ days to ship so largely the entire month wasn’t tariffed.
Then add to it companies were eating the cost of tariffs at first to avoid raising prices hoping Trump would back off instead of ruining the economy. It worked to an extent but you see Walmart starting to announce price increases now because the tariffs are still too high.
