Raleigh, NC (from Columbia, SC)
1981 versus Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. A 23-6 Gamecock win to start Jim Carlen's final season at USC.

I was a nine year-old kid. Dad & I made the 2.5 hour drive from Columbia to Winston-Salem. For a 9 year old on his first football road trip, it was pretty exciting stuff. Carolina D-lineman Emanuel Weaver had a great game that night, and after the game we were having dinner at a W-S Pizza Hut. A fellow Carolina fan who was, shall we say, "into the cups", kept yelling "E-Man-uel!!!" It was great.

Carolina went 5-1 versus ACC teams that season, including a 31-13 win at #3 UNC. Carolina was 6-3 after beating NC State in Columbia on Halloween night. Carlen was fired just over a month later after finishing the season on a three game losing streak, including losses to lowly Pacific, eventual national champs Clemson, and a loss in Honolulu vs Hawaii.
