Who knows the words to the fight song?

I was talking to an Iowa relative and he knew the words to the Iowa fight song but not the alma mater. I think it is the opposite for Gamecock fans, students, and alumni. He asked if it was a southern thing to know the alma mater. I have no idea. I've never heard anyone sing the words to the fight song.

Hey let’s give a cheer Carolina is here
The fighting Gamecocks lead the way
Who gives a care if the going gets rough
Cause when it gets rough
That’s when the Cocks get going
Hail to the colors of garnet and black
In Carolina pride have we
So go gamecocks go (fight)
Drive for that goal (fight)
USC will win today (go cocks!)
So let’s give a cheer Carolina is here
The fighting gamecocks lead the way!

Or something close to that. It’s the one Dietzel introduced.

I looked up the lyrics and played the song. The words don't fit too well. I'll just continue to say Go Cocks.

Carolina, Let your voices ring, to you we sing our praises high
Ring out! Sing out! On to victory! Forever fight we'll do or die
Carolina, Fight with all your might, let all unite in proud acclaim
Then battle on together, one and all forever
Fight, we've got to win the game, Rah! Rah! Rah!
Garnet & Black we raise, Gamecocks forever praise
So fight for Carolina, Cheer for Carolina, Hail to our U.S.C.
We cheer forever U.S.C.!

That's the one we didn't appropriate from some Broadway musical or another. Dietzel came up with the one we have now and someone put appropriate lyrics to it. I don't remember them all but fights songs are a lot better when people can and do sing them.

The tune comes from the Broadway musical “ How Now Dow Jones” or something like that

We have two fight songs. The band plays tooth of them.
Nice pickup vacock. In pregame they breakout the old one. I never made the connection until now.

Always known the words to both the fight song and Alma mater. The Alma mater is classic. The fight song has never really thrilled me, but we all react cause it is the fight song. Someone should start a thread asking for a lyrics rewrite for the current tune.....

That would be real interesting....lol.....

I do pretty much, but I just hum it. This is one Top 10 list, and of course is an all-time Who’s Who of College Foosball with the exception of RKansas I suppose. Alabama just had to be included, but it’s boring. Michigan’s and ND’s are classics, and are definitely Too 5 to me, but I’ll put our old one up against any of them. Classic, clean, collegiate. Paul should’ve minded his business. He didn’t change the LSU fight song, did he? It sounds just like some other dumb Tiger one. But anyway, of course I’m biased, but most of this list is pedestrian, but not biased about Tennessee. Theirs sux total donkey a$$. It actually sounds like 2 songs being played together and it’s awful. As for Notre Dame, you know you’re #1 when every CFB fan knows the words.

Interesting video. A few comments:

1. Southern California's Fight On is the best fight song ever. Period.
2. Rocky Top is not UT's fight song. Its kinda like saying Sandstorm or 2001 is our fight song. Their band plays their actual fight song immediately after every TD.
3. No way Arkansas or Nebraska are one of the 10 best.
4. Underrated fight songs = UCLA, Mississippi State, LSU, Georgia Tech

I’m very familiar with the tune but never knew it had words let alone was the original fight song. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve known the words to the other (current) fight song. My dad taught them to me as a kid

Years ago, my father had an LP with many classic collegiate fight songs. Silly man let his young sons play with the album a little too much.....

Most people don't realize that Tennessee has an official fight song and Rocky Top isn't it.

And by the way, there's plenty to debate about regarding this list.

Nor that Ohio State has two official fight songs, "Buckeye Battle Cry" and "Across the Field". Both are well-known and easy to sing, which is the problem with ours....it is hard to sing along with the music.

If I'm not mistaken, the tune to "Across the Field" was used by The University of Chicago for their fight song way back when they played football. It was called "Wave the Flag" (for Old Chicago...)

Could be. I know Ohio State introduced it in 1915 as the fight song. This is the only history prior to 1915 that I could find:

"Note: Across The Field incorporates elements from two Ohio State songs that have long faded from history. The line "Wahoo! Wahoo for Ohio!" honors the original fight song Wahoo! Wahoo!. The melody of the line "Let's win that old conference now!" is to the melody of the last line of You're A Grand Old Flag. The song Grand Old Ohio State used the melody of You're A Grand Old Flag."

I recant my testimony about the University of Chicago's fight song. I found a clip on YouTube from an old phonograph record. It is not the same as "Across the Field" When I was in high school band, we had a book that contained many college fight songs that we played as fillers for the cheerleaders to dance to at pep rallies and on Friday nights. Both songs were in that book - along with many others, and my memory proved muddled.

1. USC-Left
2. Notre Dame
3. Michigan
4. Wisconsin

In SEC
1. Texas A&M
2. Alabama
3. Carolina (just kidding). LSU

Yes to the alma mater, kind of to the fight song.
Our fight song is fairly dumb when compared to the classics of Michigan, UNC, Notre Dame, etc,
Some of Dietzel's BS that STILL has a stench!!

I mean talk about a NEEDED change!!

I do believe our original was a lot better from what I've been told - a "more-better" fit from what some of my Old Timer Buddies have told me over the years.

JMHOFWIW

A lot of merit to that post, especially points 2 &3.

I think we ought to go back to it; ditch the other one; push the words.
