I asked a good friend of mine who is a pretty big Ole Miss booster with access to the program about Dan Werner. He told me that Werner is a very good offensive mind and QB coach. But he says he doesn’t have a great outward personality and isn’t a good recruiter... if fact he really didn’t recruit at all at Ole Miss (supposedly, that’s why Freeze parted ways with him). However, in the next breath, he says that Dan is a awesome guy once you get to know him... and a great coach.

FWIW, my friend also told me that hiring Roper was a mistake, when it happened.

The recruiting and personality thing might be why he was in an analyst role at Bama. But we'll make use of his offensive knowledge, I hope.

Still wondering why Werner wasn’t made Coordinator? How does one go from Highlight reel offense at Ole Miss to analyst at Bama to QB coach at SC? Anybody have the story of what went wrong there?

If so, more coaches ought to have it. But those players are getting paid large to take it and produce. And he has credibility on his side born out of winning.

yep... and Bobby Knight was no fun to be around.. but winning cures a lot of faults in sports

If Werner can get the full potential out of Bentley, then look out. If we find a way to start scoring points, then we will be a seriously good team and that will be a key recruiting tool.

While addressing the hire of the new offensive analyst after Tuesday’s practice, Saban joked that the Crimson Tide’s history against Werner’s Ole Miss squads led to Werner’s new position:

“Dan Werner, from Ole Miss, do I need to tell our fans or anybody on our staff the issues that we’ve had with their offense the last couple of years?” he joked in the press conference.

Saban then went on to say that Werner was an outstanding assistant at Ole Miss and should be a valuable addition to the Alabama staff:

“Always had a tremendous amount of respect for what they do and how they coach it. I think it will help us on offense and defense to have a guy around here that can add some knowledge and experience to the way they do RPOs, some of the things they did in the passing game. I’ve always had a lot of respect for Dan.”

Ole Miss lost to Alabama 48-43 in 2016 after defeating the Crimson Tide 23-17 in 2014 and 43-37 in 2015, so clearly Werner had Saban’s number. Now, they’ll be working together, especially when the two schools meet up in Tuscaloosa in Week 5 of the 2017 season.

You know, it's gotta be a little sticky coaching Bentley with Daddy observing everything that goes on.
Hopefully daddy will mind his own business.

Someone on here said that his wife died and he has a special needs child to care for. That is why an off field job worked out best for him then. Knowing Champ's good will, he probably assured him that his child will be professionally cared for when he is needed on the road.

Bobby Knight was a coach for another era.
I do not think Bobby could function in a "snowflake" world where recruits need daily "love letters." That may be Frank Martin's "problem." To play for either coach, you were / are tough as nails and you had better not expect to be pampered.

That's right. That was my thought on it. The problem with Bobby was that, as he got older, he also got more unruly and abusive, even for that era. He never mellowed at all during his coaching career that I could see. There came a time when he was truly over the line, the kind of man who can't work for anyone else.

Other poster is correct....Dan s wife died at age 37 leaving him a young daughter and an autistic son. He got into high school football originally to free up time to care for his children. When freeze brought him on staff the agreement was that he wasn't really positioned to hammer the road on the recruiting trail due to life at home.

Ole Miss: maybe he was considered a poor recruiter because he wouldn't follow the recruiting tactics

Bama: maybe he was kept away from recruits just in case he had some Ole Miss recruiting "stain" on him.

I'm thinking Werner is QB coach in name only. I believe he is actually co offensive coordinator. And a safety net for Muschamp.
Agree. The hiring of Werner has greatly eased my concerns of hiring a first-time inexperienced coordinator in McClendon. Having someone like Werner to bounce things off of should help McClendon have less "growing pains."

Every Gamecock needs to read this. WOW! Thanks for posting.

We have much more than a QB coach, we have an individual who has a great perspective and appreciation of family ... of relationships ... of life. I am thankful we have him football wise (due to the inexperience of BMac as an OC) ... however, after reading this, I am thankful for the program, individual players, individuals PERIOD, who will benefit from his experience, his wisdom, and of his convictions ....

Life is good ... may our Lord be lifted up!

Some qualities are beyond a resume
I can only pray I would show this type of courage and personality if I ever have to deal with such an ordeal. This man has not and will not ever face this kind of problem in football. I am sure he doesn't rattle so easy. I would think he has a great mind set to deal with stressful situations. I would like my kid to be associated with this type of family man.

Wow! Werner is my kind of coach .... and parent. This is the kind of man with character that is an asset to any staff.
Yes he is and does. Boom and he should fit well together in the character dept. He will be good for young QBs in showing what it means to be a man. Lost the love of his life way too soon.

I don't think Boom was concerned about recruiting with Werner. BMcC is supposed to be our best recruiter.

From the way I see it he's been brought in to tutor BMcC.

I would be very disappointed if that is the case; usually coaches are harder on their own child than otherwise. In addition, both Bentleys seem to the respect of their teammates, which would tend to indicate no issues. JMHO
