thus far in the season - for poor, sloppy, disinterested and uninspired play. After the opening day loss to CofC, he stated that he didn't want to be associated with a team that played like USC played vs the Cougers. Then, of course, came the fiasco yesterday AT HOME where we were BLANKED for the FIRST time, ever in Carolina Stadium before a PACKED house on a BRIGHT sunny day @ 70 degrees.

I don't recognize this team. Who in the hell ARE these guys?

I don't like it either but these are college students playing baseball. Most of these kids are not going to be major league players, which means they are going to struggle at the plate on occasion and make errors, which major leaguers do. On top of that, they have things going on in their lives you have no clue about (i.e. the pressures of going to class and doing well academically and balancing that time with one of the top baseball programs in the country. Throw in relationships and you have a lot to think about. It's why I don't bet on college sports.

It's early yet, let things play out. UCONN basketball is a perfect example of why you don't judge a team after a few games. Last year, they barely made it into the NCAA basketball tournament and they ended up winning it all. We beat Vanderbilt 2 of 3 to end the season last year, yet Vanderbilt won the National Championship. We've beaten Clemson thorougly over the last 5 years. Nothing lasts forever. It's not like we are playing Coker College every year. Clemson is a good team and we played poorly this series. It happens.

Just remember, it's not how you start, it's how you finish!

Name one player or coach that showed some emotion during the game. We'd strike out at the plate and walk to the dugout like we were just returning a library book.

Good post, but I just want these guys to get pissed off, mad as Hell, jacked to the sky and ready to take on the NY Yankees (well, at least in spirit). They just look so damn disinterested. Maybe we're recruiting the wrong type of player. Where's the Wingo? Where's the Morales? These guys may measure up in baseball stats, but the grit, determination, competitiveness . . . they're missing.

Okay, here goes. How many of you, deep down, think Pastidis made a too-quick, knee-jerk decision in giving Ray Tanner his 'dream job' of Athletic Director? Academic types do those things often where athletics is concerned, i.e. 'I just want the damn file off my desk - I've got a billion dollar capital fund drive going!'

I don't think this was the case. Dr. Pastides is a HUGE baseball fan, and has good knowledge of the game. He used to sit by us at games, and it would be fun talking to him about the game in general.

This is the absolute worst excuse ever for a loss. Athletes put in time, sure, but they have more resources to make it easy for them to succeed academically. Personal problems? Everyone has them. Just look at professional athletes that have to worry about being traded, kids, spouses, mistresses, mortgages, finances, taxes, etc... These kids have it made.

Dr. Pastidis is a good man; great President - he'll go down as one of the best, if not THE best, in USC history. His campus physical expansion record alone has gone beyond the wildest hopes and dreams of many fellow alums from the 60's and 70's -= and he's not finished! His current capital fund drive (1 billion $$$ and up) will take us to heights we never dreamed of achieving. Oh, and he's one heck of a baseball fan - great knowledge of the game, too.

If Dr. Pastides has a great knowledge of the game and is such a fan, maybe he can volunteer some of his free time to be the hitting coach, or fielding coach, for that matter.

"Okay, here goes. How many of you, deep down, think Pastidis made a too-quick, knee-jerk decision in giving Ray Tanner his 'dream job' of Athletic Director?"

Never understood why everyone was so sure Ray would make a good AD. He was a good baseball coach, but what does that have to do with anything? An athletic director at a D-1, SEC school in the 21st century is the CEO of a multi-million dollar, huge operation. It has little to do with turning two and the infield fly rule.

All sports have started going south except for women's basketball since his hiring as AD and have gotten progressively worse every year.

Common denominators usually don't lie.

I think he's in over his head honestly but only time will tell.

I understand everyone's viewpoint, but the DNA of certain kids is going to be different than that of a Michael Roth, Wingo, Merrifield, Christian Walker, Matt Price, etc...

You do need someone to fire the team up and maybe that's Jordan Gore, but your strength coach can't be the only one getting on these players. It needs to come from within. Derek Jeter was never that guy to get on his teammates or beat up water coolers like Paul O'Neill, so everyone leads differently. Sometimes, it just takes time to find those leaders.

All I know is we have a good team, not a great team yet and more help is on the way next year. Destino and Stokes have a chance to be special players, as well as Brandon Murray and Clarke Schmidt, but it takes time to gel as a team and we have a lot of young players, who are being asked to contribute early. You just don't replace a Greyson Greiner and Joey Pankake easily.

Give it some time! Trust me, I sit right behind the Gamecock dugout and nobody wants these kids to succeed more than their parents. Unlike some fans, they can't leave when the going gets tough, so support these kids. They are a good group of kids who really seem to like each other. That'll go a long way in the end!

Btw, I am not a parent, but my seats are in that section, so I do get a chance to interract with many of the parents.

Ray seems like a guy that trusts his coaches and gives them the latitude to run things their way. And it looks like he's friends with them. That seems like a terrific idea, but there are dangers in that approach to athletics. When the time comes, we'll see if he's willing to pull the trigger on an under-performing coach. He obviously gave Spurrier the benefit of the doubt when the HBC decided to keep some guys that were not fan favorites (see the two knucklehead coaches almost fighting on sideline during UGA game...sigh, yes, Ward hires).

And no, I'm not suggesting they fire CH or Frank Martin. But please, no more raises or extensions until there's improvement in the W-L column.

Things were just going too well, I suppose. We wouldn't be Carolina if we had hired a CEO level AD. Would Coach Tanner have stuck around as baseball coach had the Board done it's job and conducted a nation wide search to find an established top level Director of Athletics? We will never know.

As to Coach Holbrook, there is a lack of in game fire that appears to translate to the rest of the dugout. Nobody looks like they are having fun. We are used to seeing our teams having fun when they are playing well, and fighting like hell when they are struggling. I believe it comes from the top. I fear that it may be time for Coach Tanner to step in and make something happen before our baseball team turns into a bunch of quitters like so many on our football team have become. Coach Spurrier is running THEM off left and right. I hate to see our baseball players squandering the hard won status that those who came before them sweated and bled so much for.

He should have blistered them after the loss at taterville! Maybe they would of had their $hit together for the next two games!! NO damn
excuse to lose to the tater-tots in ANY sport!!!!!!!!!

Chad doesn't know how to motivate his players apparently. Now Mr. Nice Guy is chewing their butts out. Is that supposed to make us think he has control now or something? He should have been doing that every day of the offseason after getting embarrassed by Maryland in a home regional last year.

See, that's one of my concerns. Maryland pasted our tails to end last year, then it keeps right on with Clemson to start this year.
