Yet ANOTHER "clemson" National Record!!!

(only land grant school in the greater southeastern USA that doesn't have one)

Thank you for that delightful piece of incredibly obscure trivia. I had no idea the obsession ran that deep. SC State is considered a land grant school btw - so I guess you can direct me to an alumni veterinary practice.

O come on 1 day they don't play the NC for another week and half.
Looks like having the games on separate days is a no go. I agree with the articles below that the best solution would be just having them on the Saturday after Christmas. I didn't realize the Rose Bowl was such a big part of the problem.

Pretty evident that playing the game on a Thursday afternoon at 4pm had an impact on the viewership.

Only people who are mad at this are the retailers who paid prime for commercial time.

You would think lying blatantly would be reason enough , to expect a response. I am surprised your own won't police this stuff. It has to be embarrassing.

Maybe the wire services and news sources are lying ... or maybe 'esso' is putting his own spin on things.

I'm just regurgitating the headlines, bubba - ain't my 'news flash' ... TV viewership was DOWN - LED by clemson's paltry 9-rating (5-rating in San Diego/Southern California) - compared to playoff game #1's 15.5-rating in 2014.

That info is according to the wire story link listed above. AIN'T MY 'NEWS FLASH'!!!

ANOTHER 'record' for clemson!!! HaHaHa!!!

Archie, you must have gotten your degree in history from Tillman University. The University of South Carolina was never SC A&M. The only closure occurred during the War between the States when all male students joined the Army of the Confederacy before Clemson existed Ben Tillman ,true founder of the school bearing his name all over it's campus, tried his best to close USC and The Citadel, hating them as much as the black race , a hatred still festered in Clemson University. The University of South Carolina is the most honored and recognized college in the state and always will be the flagship university doing more for the people of this state, black or white than any other institution of higher learning.

ESPN's overnight 'viewership' numbers are in for the college football playoffs ... DOWN 37% nationally, pulled down by clemson's MISERABLE following and 'Bama's total blowout of Michigan State.

The clemson-Oklahoma playoff TV-viewer game numbers are now the LOWEST in recorded history (another BOWL RECORD for clemson!!!).

In the San Diego/central CA region viewership for the clemson game was DOWN almost SEVENTY (70!!!) PERCENT from last year (WOW!!!) ... proving yet again that NOBODY knows (or cares) about clemson football.

Indeed, 'clemson' football consistently proves to be pretty much an in-bred, self-congratulating, self-absorbed, otherwise unimportant - of little to no consequence activity for the rest of America.

WHO would have believed clemson would break its own sorry Orange Bowl TV viewership record (set just last year!) while playing in a PLAYOFF game? That's almost unbelievable ... but the tigs managed to do it!!!

But help may be on the way as more clemson fans are purchasing their first TV's. Preliminary sales figures for upstate South Carolina indicate initial television purchases are spiking, aided by renewal of previously abandoned 'lay-away' policies at K-Mart, Wal-Mart and H.H. Gregg ... while all area-pawn shops and consignment stores are reporting substantially increased sales.

"The farm-implement auction in March will probably set a record," said Lewis Harrison of the Walnut Grove Auction Company in Roebucx, SC. "We've got clemson fans gone crazy, they're swapping $1200 spreaders for analog TV's that ain't worth $20 bucks. They've never seen or heard of HDTV, and so think 'cause those old big-screen boxes are 5-feet tall and weigh 500-pounds it's a fair trade. I swapped one fan an RCA set for a John Deere coupler that ain't been made since the 70's. These people have gone nuts."

STAY TUNED!!!
I believe this idiotic rant would also apply to Oklahoma. Seems to me they would share this record with us. I'm sure that the fact that the game started at 1 p.m. on the West coast and most people did not get home from work until it was over had no effect on the ratings there.

Seriously, it is not hard to find the correct history. Your version is not correct.

You may want to GOOGLE "South Carolina College: 1801-1865". It may open your eyes when it comes to racism in this state.

Nice try but no where in that link does it say anything about it being a record low. More made up information by ss1, a guy so desperate to make his rival look bad he flat out lies and inserts quotes in articles that he made up.

Hey ss1, did you also see in that link you posted that the bama-MSU game was down 36.8 % also, compared to Clemson's game being down 38.whatever%. What a huge difference. So I guess nobody cares about Bama either. You really stretched for this one ss1.

Facts are the clemson-Oklahoma game had the best orange bowl numbers since 2006 and was the 7th best non championship game ever on ESPN. Sounds like plenty of people enjoyed watching clemson demolish Oklahoma and advance to another national championship.

I think it was more WHEN the games were played. Not the teams.

Here's another source from the University. It treads delicately:

It was dumb to put the game in the middle of the week in the middle of the afternoon. Not everybody is off on new year eve. Plus it's 1 o clock out west. Both games should have been prime time. ESPN screwed up.
Here we go, ESPN hates Clemson.

SS1 is the greatest poster to ever grace this board. Sincerely, the guy is brilliant. It's funny to see one so well versed/educated, amongst others far below (robertfootball, etc.)

Whatever happened to Trooper Del?

You need another link? They've only conducted the NCAA playoff format twice - do you suffer from attention deficiency syndrome? I provided a 'link' - USA Today.

The 2015 clemson-oklahoma NCAA football playoff game drew a 9-share nationally vs. last year's #1 - #4 ('Bama v. OSU) playoff game's 15.5 share. On the west coast clemson/OU only drew a FIVE (5!!!) share ... DOWN almost SEVENTY (70%) PERCENT!!! from last year's far more desirable contest.

Since LAST YEAR established the 'baseline' for playoff TV viewership and THIS YEAR'S TV viewership was SUBSTANTIALLY LOWER than last year that 'fact' bestows clemson with the CURRENT ALL-TIME RECORD for "lowest TV viewership" for an NCAA college football playoff game!!!

Now SOME clemson fans are claiming that pitiful 'record' should be SHARED with Oklahoma. I concur. It the spirit of equity and fair-play you SHARE that miserable moniker with the Sooners ... hitler, jeffrey dahmer, pee wee gaskins - they all had momma's and daddy's It takes TWO to tango!!!

SO ORDERED.

Hahaha, wow, you really are bat shit crazy. I guess Clemson will just have to live with having lower ratings in ONLY the SECOND YEAR of the playoffs, played during work hours on a work day. So Alabama has the record for the second lowest rating in the playoffs ever. What an embarrassment! Ha-ha, wow.

Clemson is playing in the national championship....deal with it.

Man, you managed to append three asterisk's to your dubious 'record' in an attempt to 'justify' the TRUTH - plus, talk nasty.

clemson, the school nobody wants to watch. You WILL draw your largest TV crowd in school history a week from today when the world tunes in to watch No. 2 (Number TWO? - HA!!! ... a TD+ favorite already!!!) Alabama run all those orange vests back into the ditch. Chick-fil-A is having an internal debate as we speak whether to (for a limited time - game night) also serve necks, McDonald's is considering serving goat and Pappa John's is thinking 'bout sprinkling its 'large' pizzas with confectioner's sugar in honor of clemson's participation and your player's penchant for 'blow'.

What's most hilarious is more Gamecock fans will be there in-person to watch the game than clemson supporters, a LARGE number of whom can't (and don't) even support themselves.

You best go snag yourself one of those consignment shop TV's .. they are FLYING off the shelves in Pickens County!!! Swap 'em that Kubota lynch-pin you spot-welded last week ... snow season's over and you ain't gonna' be using that bucket 'till next fall anyway. (If Pappa John's pulls the trigger that confectioner's sugar goes great with their 'Hawaiian').

Your OP is incredibly ignorant. Even if the Clemson game was primetime on new years night, and the ratings were lower than last year, that still isn't something to be ashamed about. Considering the playoffs have only been around for 2 years. Nice try though, but as always you made yourself look extremely ignorant and petty.

Facts are....the Clemson-Oklahoma game was the 7th highest viewed non championship game EVER!! That sounds pretty good for a game being played on a Thursday before most people even get off work. Every other year a playoff game will be played on new years eve at 4pm. The ratings will always be lower than the ones played on new years day, no matter who's playing.

Birmingham and Greenville? HAHAHA!!!

Man, please. Birmingham's EIGHT COUNTY (dang near 1/3rd of the state) MSA isn't but 49th in the country, while Greenville's MSA is 63rd!!!

There are 30+ MSA's with LARGER populations than those two markets COMBINED!!!

SPIN IT Mr. Duncan!!! Loop 'de Loop!!!
I don't know how y'all get bated into responding to this guy. He throws out idiotic statements that he's aware are outlandish to stir the pot among both fan bases. The fact is that he would admit he'd give his left nut to be where the taters are right now.

Here's a good source for you, from the University itself:

http://www.sc.edu/about/our_history/

(1) USC tried to integrate.
(2) "Clemson" (then part of USC) freaked out.
(3) Politicians (apparently more than half "Clemson") decided another solution was needed.
(4) "Clemson" runs to the hills to form another university for themselves

Who's the founder? Racism and white supremacy are co-founders.

In a truly just world, Clemson University wouldn't exist. The state would be much stronger and better recognized if Clemson University had never been initiated.

That's a truly odd interpretation or fantasy. Clemson was essential to the origins of the first Morrill Act, although he had left the government (as the Supt of Agriculture) and joined the confederacy by the time it was passed. An agricultural and mechanical school, in name only, was started in Columbia to take advantage of the Act and collect the Federal funds that came along with it. However, the students at what was to become USC weren't interested and instead continued to study poetry, art, literature and sewing. That did cause Clemson a large amount of grief, so he used his will to establish a true agricultural and mechanical school on the land he inherited from the Calhoun family. The people in Columbia and the Low Country fought it after Clemson's death, with the hope of continuing to collect and misuse the federal land-grant money. At the time, there was not public funding or support in SC for a state-supported liberal arts college. However, the college in Columbia did survive to go through several reorganizations and emerge as USC and grew into what you know today with medical and law schools. If you read between the lines, one of the keys to their survival was that they started to provide engineering degrees, which were initially unauthorized, that were key to helping industrialize the state.

Clemson did integrate in January, 1963, when Harvey Gantt entered to study architecture. USC integrated later that year or early the following year.

Fantasy? Surely not for black people.

Wasn't Pitchfork Ben Tillman fundamental in the Clemson founding? This Tillman? You know, Tillman Hall Tillman? That guy that used to brag about killing black people on the floor of the US House - so proud we should be! That red shirt and all - proud for South Carolina! We should rename a building and erect a statue out front! We should fight to keep it, even if it's 2016! Yes we should!
Really - Clemson's founding was ALL about the Morrill Act. Seriously. It had nothing at all to do with voter intimidation, political power, and stirring up poor whites against those "dandies" in Columbia and Charleston. All this you hear about those things has been vastly overstated! Propaganda? Never! Nothing but the whole-hearted complete honest truth!

The founders of Clemson did want a better Ag school. But Tillman stirred up the racism to get it done and stay elected. The state would've been much farther ahead if "Clemson" hadn't rejected their spot right in the state capital. But the fact that integration was coming to the University of South Carolina was too much to bear.

That's my "odd" interpretation of how our orange-clad brethren came to be, how their rivalry with the University of South Carolina really began, and how the state would be better off if they had never been formed.

Clearly the awful viewership of the games was entirely due to ESPN shoving it's head up their collective asses when scheduling the games for 4 pm on a normal workday for most people. Was anyone else sitting in traffic when that game kicked off like I was? Just another big time homer post that doesn't make too much sense if you ask me.

Did anyone else see funny numbers regarding the viewership of the orange bowl? I mentioned to my cousin the ratings were bad because of the awful timing, he tells me it was the most watched since 2006. He wasn't the only one that told me that "2006" line either. What was up with that?

Buddy, it's just plain wrong and you must know it. If USC was attempting to integrate in 1876 before it shut down, it was to bring in more white students. USC was over 90% African-American in 1876. When the new school opened as the SC College of A&M Arts in 1880, it was all white. The founder of Clemson, Thomas Green Clemson, died eight years later and left his land and money to the state for the new Clemson College (rejected a spot in Columbia, you say?). Clemson had earlier been heavily involved in establishing what became U Maryland. You see, he was from PA, educated in France, had been a diplomat to Belgium and then ran the government bureau which later became the USDA. He saw modernization of SC, in both agriculture and industry, as a way out of deep poverty after the civil war. Clemson, as a real agriculture and engineering school, was essential to the industrialization of SC in the early 1900s. USC contributed a little too, with the initially unauthorized engineering degrees, but has always been a smaller engineering school and did not provide an adequate number of engineers at the time. That is a statue of Clemson, not Tillman, at the university. The statue of Tillman that you are thinking of is in Columbia at the state capitol.

When the people in Columbia and the low-country tried to stop to stop the establishment of Clemson College in order to keep fraudulently collecting the Morrill funds, Tillman led the fight to implement Clemson's will as the leader of the agrarians. Although there was little support to maintain a state-supported liberal arts school, he helped ensure that USC remained funded and open afterwards.

Ben Tillman was a very bad guy. In their ways, so were John C. Calhoun, Jimmy Byrnes, who would have been president otherwise, Strom Thurmond, and countless other South Carolina politicians. The state has a bad history. We've tried hard to progress past that, but there are still a lot of ignorant people in the state.

Are you now going to say that it was a bad thing for Clemson to supply so many soldiers and officers for WWII? They supplied the third most officers behind TAMU and West Point.

Bowl viewership as a whole was down this year...mainly because of poor matchups and scheduling and kickoff times were way off.

Trivia for you which school Clemson or South Carolina integrated first?

Ill give you a hint... Its the one not in Columbia.

Both schools have skeletons in their closet take a walk around your campus and look at the history of the names on your buildings. Simms as an example tortured and killed black slaves in the name of science doing experiments on them without the use of any anesthesia. That is just one of many to sit here with your holier than though attitude bringing up shit from a century + ago is just childish.

Clemson founded Clemson through his Will.

They reopened it in 1880 as an all-white agricultural college and during the next 25 years the institution became enmeshed in the upheaval of late 19th century South Carolina politics.
