Outside Linebacker - Donovan Westmoreland

6’3” 215lbs

Rivals Rating = 5.7 / 3 star

Outside linebacker Donovan Westmoreland is a 3 star prospect from Griffin, Georgia and is one of five commitments from the state of Georgia in the 2022 recruiting class. According to his prospect profile, he was recruited by defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey and former outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson.

Westmoreland comes in at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 215 pounds. He is most comparable to current Gamecock Brad Johnson. Similar to Johnson coming into college, Westmoreland usually plays on the edge, often in a three point stance. In high school, when necessary, both players were shifted inside to defensive tackle. Where Johnson had more mass to his frame and was known to power through blockers, at this stage Westmoreland relies more on his quickness and agility.

Film on Westmoreland exhibits a player with a quick first step and excellent initial burst. Westmoreland could also be labeled as a “thumper”, as he has the ability to land some heavy hits when given the opportunity. South Carolina fans will enjoy watching Westmoreland develop as he already shows a relentless pursuit of the football. He has a good sized frame to add on more mass, as well as long arms to help keep blockers at bay or give him the length to reach the ball carrier.

South Carolina managed to flip Westmoreland from his original verbal commitment to Georgia - winning a head to head recruiting battle with the current National Champions. According to Rivals he collected a total of 12 offers that included UGA, Mississippi State, and Tennessee. Westmoreland finished the year rated 5.7, ranked 59th overall in the state of Georgia and 40th best outside linebacker nationally.

Westmoreland gives South Carolina a player that can be used in multiple ways. He can be slotted at the “WILL” linebacker spot or grow into a defensive end. In defensive coordinator Clayton White’s 4-2-5 scheme, the ability to drop into coverage and rush the passer is a necessity. Westmoreland can fulfill both those requirements. South Carolina is in good shape at the defensive end and linebacker positions for the 2022 season, so if Westmoreland sees action, it’ll most likely be on special teams.
