Based on hires already made, the new defensive coordinator is going to either be coaching linebackers or the secondary, it does appear.
We can confirm that former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason has been at least on the radar here. How high in the pecking order he's been, I'm not precisely sure.
There's reason to believe there hasn't been a large candidate pool in the running - Mason was a "newer" name that we did hear pop up, but the search hasn't been all over the place.
North Carolina has, from what we've heard, made keeping Jay Bateman a huge priority.
