Bob Carlen was, no doubt, a great soldier and leader, but he was no more qualified to lead USC than Pastides would be to lead West Point. He was devoid of credentials to lead a large research institution. No terminal degree, no experience in academia, outside of West Point. Absent a nakedly political appointment from a feckless BOT under pressure from Duh Gubnah, he would have never gotten within a stone's throw of the Horseshoe.
As for Nick, I spent 30 seconds scrolling his Twitter feed, and that's time I'll wish I had back at the end of my life. He is a meaningless, nasty little Twitter troll.

The vast majority of why Caslen shouldn't have selected to lead our University can be said about our current AD.

I get what you're saying. But others have posted several tweets/FB posts between the two in other threads.
The two have a history on social media.
I finally read the tweet(s). I understand they probably did deal with a lot and the folks they dealt with were likely toxic. It’s sad they couldn’t separate that from those that still supported him and their family.
Sadly, Bob Caslen engaging in a Twitter battle is possibly the greatest piece of evidence he was never qualified for this job.
Not sure what they expected. Congratulating the graduates of the University of California was one thing. To plagiarize the speech as a president of the university was one thing. But to be the President of the University that doesn’t even send a sympathy note to the University’s largest donor in history…that’s simply unforgivable. The only bad part is that Caslen was the only one gone from that. The entire BOT demonstrated their lack of qualification for their position botching that. They’ve embarrassed this university so much over the last few years I’m not sure the damage is repairable.

Thanks for a measured response in this social media crossfire. Yeah, I have read the tweets. His kids are mad, protecting their dad, and I've only seen one Dad tweet. I think he's probably tired of his family being savaged (and his kids dishing it out too) but I don't see him engaging in a tweet war as described by a poster below. Maybe I missed something? That's why we need proof when people start flinging accusations.
You and I know this is all political and you and I know this stuff gets old on the board. Real old. Wish we could get back on sports.

His kids are mad, his dad tweets and also does an interview with a newspaper disparaging the university. The whole family has shown total immaturity and a lack of class. Frankly, it's all beneath Caslen and his military tenure but he has not put a stop to it. They play the victim card, even as his tenure produced one embarrassing episode after another that continued to shine a spotlight on his lack of qualifications to get the job in the first place.
And we have folks like you on this board who have constantly made excuses for him, deflected and even supported him through it all.
There is one truth here.....the man was grossly unqualified to get this job, the BOT bowed to political pressure and it is an episode that soundly embarrassed the university. And now we have to deal with the aftermath with his immature family. Moaning that a poster didn't post a direct link to the social media garbage from this family as an effort to deflect is sad.
Support your university....not those that trash it.

Not sure what is political about a truthful statement that Bob Caslen was a terrible President, deserved to be removed as President and is not a victim.

Let me tell you Texas experience. We hired Admiral McRaven as Chancellor of the UT-System. He is a great man. Favorably impressed everyone and gave some of the greatest speeches (that he wrote) you will ever find. But over his few years as Chancellor, even he would say he didn't accomplish much. He was used to the military, you give an order and it is carried out. Sergeants, Chief Petty Officers and lieutenants in the military are not tenured and can't say "I don't think so." Universities run much more on a consensus basis, with leaders nudging a direction, not mandating orders. Change is expected to be incremental, not sudden. Anyway, he had a serious medical problem three years in and expressed a desire to "spend more time with his family" so his Chancellor tenure was short. Not the usual 6 years. Obviously a frustrating experience for him. So a military background can have some negatives for a university leadership candidate.
On the other hand, Texas A&M hired Robert Gates as Texas A&M President in 2002. His background was military, but his service as Director of the CIA and deputy National Security Adviser made him more sensitive to university style politics and need for consensus. To get me to praise anything A&M is amazing, but he was truly a great university President. Other Texas A&M Presidents have been bozos, with Murano and Loftin being true clowns.

Everyone's politics are transparent on this board. That's why threads like this veer off into places none of us want to go on a sports board anymore. We have grown tired of it.
But, folks are defending "their" truths whether we like them or not. It's a new, sometimes inconvenient world where just about anything goes. The only way to avoid arguments is to quit rehashing this politically loaded stuff for no other apparent reason.
