Who on here thinks that Clemson U should change their name? Their board of trustees has changed the name of their honors college to remove John C Calhoun's name, and they have petitioned the state legislature to change the name of TIllman Hall because of Ben Tillman's racist views. Why are they being hypocritical and keeping the name Clemson? Thomas Green Clemson owned, sold and traded slaves. He also volunteered for the Confederate army. So why is it ok to keep his name on the university, but remove Calhoun's name and Tillman's name? Just curious what you all think...

I think it will happen. I don't think it will happen in the near future but it will happen.

Of course they should but they will come up with 50 things they will do to enhance their image and help things - they will say that makes up for being called Clemson and being related to John. C. Cowlhoun.

It wouldn’t matter if they changed there name to university of the tweedle dumbs they still would whip out ass in football as it sits. So I ask what does it mater?

I think all this name changing and cancel culture, and erasing history needs to stop. As much as I hate Clemson, they shouldn't have to change their name because a small fraction of people want to erase our history.
I'm not saying I agree or disagree. The point is their hypocrisy. If they're going to remove one man's name from building or a college for his views or actions, then they should remove Clemson's name for the same attitudes and behaviors.

Wait, changing "Clemson" or "Tigers"? I'm kind of fond of Clemson Bunghole Pokers.

I mean, if we’re being thorough...the name prolly needs to go. “Dabo U”?

(I’m all for taking down a lot of these tacky, racist Jim Crowe-era statues you see all around the South, but where do we stop?)

I say erase it and no one has anything to complain about

No, it won't. Not until Yale University changes its name.

That may happen, too! But, Clemson will be changing their name at sometime in the future, it won't be the near future but it will happen.

All Confederate monuments have been removed or are in the process of being moved in Asheville, NC. Asheville, NC! And I'm not saying it's a good thing BUT IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!

Well, they will today but hopefully that won't be forever.

Yes, and Asheville looks like a war zone. There is graffiti everywhere. So, will Clemson remove all its statues, and provide cans of spray paint so that all the malcontents can have an outlet for their artistic endeavors? Can you see where this is going? These people will never be satisfied, and it is not really about confederates, nor is it about the name "Clemson", nor is it about statues.

I can see it now: The University of South Carolina at Pickens. Or, did Andrew Pickens own slaves too?

South Carolina’s roots are just as deep in the Confederacy. Should they close USC? This is a dumb post that just feeds into all of this insanity that is going on.

Ok, I assume this is a joke, cracking on clemsun... whatever destroys them is good...

But let’s all be completely honest here- Tillman is one of the most vile and disgusting human beings that ever lived! Literally documented as having bragged about personally participating in lynchings of black people during debates when he was running for office! He encouraged them and during his time as governor we had more lynchings recorded in this state than any other period of time on record. How anyone can defend his likeness or name being honored today by a state funded school or in a monument on our state’s capitol grounds is just unconscionable to me. I am not some BLM protester, I am anti-political generally speaking and do not adhere to the ideals of any one party over another... This is not political to me, it is common sense. He is perhaps the most racist horrible person who ever lived in SC and this is not a state with a history of good treatment of people of color. Clemsun aside- TILMAN should not be honored by anyone in this state. Let his name be remembered in history books the same way Hitler’s is (NO I did not compare what he did to Hitler murdering tens of millions of people..) but statues honoring him and buildings named after him is a no-go from me!

You sound like a good anti-racist to me.

no, it should remain to remind them they came from his LOINS.........if not, they’ll begin to believe they be like the rest of us, then they’ll think they ain’t rednecks......just think of it in a lager picture.......Being called rednecks in the state of South Carolina. It’s sooooo ironic:)

A poster above made an excellent point. How can you remove the names of a couple of racist names on campus but yet not remove the name of one of the biggest racist for whom the institution is named? How can that be? It makes no sense whatsoever. I think that is what the Social Justice Warriors.

Freddie, I beg to differ, clemp by no way was “one of the biggest” racists........we should not judge people today by the standards of a day we know little of, much less understand......now that being said.....the name should be changed to Abe u.....oh, wait, he was one of the biggest, but we weren’t taught the behind the scene stories.......One has to dig for the full story......it was hidden in the back stacks of mckissick library.

This all would have been a much simpler matter if Tillman had followed the wishes of clemp & named it Calhoun college.

People today have been raised on clearing their browsing history..........makes sense to them that if u can’t see it, it didn’t exist.

At what point would your hypothetical "historical cleansing" be satisfied? One thing would certainly lead to another, and mankind being very flawed it would never end. You would need an army of truth squads to scour each cranny of historical society for impure actions in the past, in order to cancel anyone who does not profusely repudiate them. Family member would be denouncing family member.

The black people of Ben Tillman's era forgave Tillman for the hatred he evoked. They did not love Tillman, but they were not consumed and engulfed in hatred.

I used to respect you and your post. Regardless of school rivalry, this nonsense has to stop.
