Deshaun Watson, DeAndre Hopkins join petition to remove John C. Calhoun's name from Clemson

I’m sure there were plenty in the black community that knew about Pitchfork Ben Tillman & his close ties with CU. Money/benefits can be stronger than morals.
Perhaps. However, I'm speaking to these two individuals. The majority of those entering college are not the social activists they will be later in life. That is more than likely the case here.

I think it's time to relegate many of the Confederate Memorials, Statues, and Plaques to museums. Like it or not, many of our fellow citizens see these tributes as abhorrent and as a confirmation they are not REALLY welcome and appreciated here. Not saying to destroy them, or burn them because the context of their existence is part of the story of a reconciliation that we are still working through to this day. There are so many compelling stories of our history that better deserve to be on that stage.

I think a lot of the pushback you are going to receive on that is much like the gun control debate. Lots of people would agree to truly "common sense" reform, but dont trust it to stop there.

So people will argue for something they aren't 100% behind, because they think "what's next"?

Calhoun County is probably on the list somewhere. They've just got to get to it at some point. Don't forget about Lee County, that certainly must go?

Where will all of this 'get rid of history', good or bad, bullshit end. My prediction is NEVER! Washington and Jefferson were slave owners. Can we rename D.C. And Washington state immediately please. It will go on until even the PC police are fed up with this movement.

I don't like the terrible things that happened in World War ll but I'm not going to take books about it and throw them in the trash because it's bad. As he said you learn from past history, you don't throw it away.

I don’t think anyone is saying erase it from the history books. Just remove the monuments honoring these racist people. Germany has removed all monuments to Nazis and made it illegal to erect monuments to them. It didn’t erase it from the history books. Folks like Calhoun and Tillman weren’t just slave owners but were adamant that white people were superior to black people. Big difference.

Yet they attended Clemson anyway. Moving statues and names is silly what town in America doesn't have a MLK street. This is not going to turn out well I fear.

Wait, are you comparing Martin Luther King to racists who subjugated a race of people? Martin Luther King is one of the people we should be honoring.

I agree. My point is all the MLK streets in the world don't bother me why should a statue etc. offend anyone. MLK words have been swept into the dust pan of history and he wanted it done in the right way. His memory is being trashed and he is most likely rolling in his grave.

So you're saying street named for a man who wanted love and racial peace could and possibly should be as offensive as a statue glorifying traitors to the US who fought for the "right" to own other people...? Why would MLK offend you?

Edit: for the record, I dont much care if the statues stay or go (and it is a HOT item here in Richmond) because they dont offend me. I just want to be clear that MLK is not someone you should find offensive no matter who you are. Unlike Confederates who tried to over throw the government when they weren't getting their way. The war wasn't about slavery, northerners still owned their slaves and they weren't going to be expected to give them up. But the general perception is Southern rebels were bad. And they were, if not for the reasons most find them offensive.

HE DOESN'T offend me paladin. But why does one group demand the removal of things while the other groups bow down to their BS demands. What's going to happen when radical white groups demand MLK's name is removed? These monuments and statues don't really offend races they just want to make noise. This is a video game to these young people.

You think some people aren't legitimately offended by glorified symbols of their own people's oppression? Do you believe no black people are genuinely offended by the Confederate battle flag as well? Why do you get to decide what people (whose life experiences are far different from your own) are offended by?

I only asked about MLK offending you because you implied that there are tons of streets named after MLK, and you aren't offended by them. In juxtaposition, others obviously are not really offended by the Confederate monuments. I'm offended by them as a white southern US Navy veteran. Those men stood against our country. Why on Earth do we honor and glorify them?

I don't like that history so I'm going to put it out of my sight or destroy it. That is a great lesson in history. Whether good or bad, thousands of soldiers died for their cause, blue and gray, brothers, sons, cousins to bring forth a United States. The Union after the war still had slaves, so giving them so kind of heroic purge, not so much. History revision never works. You're then prone to repeat the same mistakes.

I agree with this and I'm a member if the SCV, albeit one of the more liberal ones, I guess. And the NAACP. And the American Legion. Because I believe in some way all are important. Diversity is important.

We need to own up to our past and own it, but what worries me about the more radical elements in this movement is that some in it might not stop at statues or renaming buildings if it doesn't somehow make their lives better.

I've spoken with some of our local activists and they quite frankly speak of love and unity but on their terms, and they dont have a middle ground. It's basically the same narrow mindedness and bigotry they claim to be against.

Fortunately they seem to be a junumerical minority.

Just curious. As a southerner, did your ancestors fight for the confedracy?

Because that will solve racism... look I am all for equality and everyone getting the same opportunities in life, but erasing history by removing names/statues is going too far and doesn't solve anything. If people are that offended by a name or statue then something is really wrong. Look at history, learn from it, and move on, don't destroy just because it offends you.
Wow, do I detect some common sense here !!

Better yet... Not only remove the name, but forfeit all the games won by Clemson against Carolina...

It's reparations time...

Two former Clemson Tigers stars and current NFL players, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, are calling on their alma mater to remove the name of John C. Calhoun from the honors college.

Calhoun, who served as the vice president of the United States under two presidents (John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson) from 1825-1832, was a proponent of slavery. Clemson is built on the former South Carolina senator's Fort Hill plantation, on which he enslaved approximately 70-80 African-Americans, according to the school's website.

"I want to bring up something that has been bothering me for a long time in my community," Hopkins wrote on Instagram. "Clemson University still honors the name of well known slave owner and pro-slavery politician John C. Calhoun on its buildings, signs, and in the name of its honors program. I felt this oppressive figure during my time at Clemson and purposely do not mention the University’s name before NFL games because of it."

Take down the statues but everyone who cares knows who donated who’s plantation for Clemson to exist. Maybe those guys should have gone to another school, or would that have been too much of a par cut?
