Could we make the NIT?

No one was even thinking this after Saturday, but the win on the road last night at UGA puts us at 13-12 overall with 5 games remaining. I'm not saying we win the remaining games, but what if we beat Mississippi State and Alabama on the road and knocked off one of the remaining three opponents (A&M at home, Arky at home, UT on the road)? That would put us at 16-14 overall going to the SEC tourney. In the past that would land an NIT bid, but I've heard it's harder to get a bid these days. I'm not up to speed on the NIT recently, so what kind of record would we need to get an NIT bid? Would be nice to see our guys finish strong and show some actual improvement year over year with an NIT bid.

The thought is nice, but I think we would have to win four of the five, making us 17-13 on the year. THEN, we would have to win at least two in the SEC tourney to get in. You are right, the NIT tournament is getting harder to get into. I'm not saying that we can't get in, but it is very unlikely.
Still, after all that is/has gone on this year. I think we are making strides in the right direction.

17-15 won't get you in the NIT anymore, it is run by the NCAA and they pick conference champs that didn't make it first. CBI will take low win teams.

There's the CIT and CBI, but you have to have a .500 or better regular-season record (for at least the CIT). They are usually decent tourneys because all the teams are pretty evenly matched (because they're all major conference teams around .500 and mid-major teams with better records).

Both can be a great experience if the team takes advantage of the extra practice and tournament-style experience.

I'd say 17 regular season wins and a SEC tournament win is the bare minimum for us to make the cut. Win 19+ games overall and we're shoo-ins.

This site has us #86 in the "Dance" standings. 72 make it in. So we are 14 spots out right now. That seems to me to be NIT territory.

The NIT's selection criteria dramatically changed a few years ago, and it is now much more difficult to make the tourney if you're a power conference team. Looking back at the last 5 years, the NIT has not taken an SEC team with less than 18 wins. The SEC is improved this year as compared to the last few years, but it will still likely take 18 wins minimum to get into the NIT, and I think it'll probably take more than 18 wins. As we currently are 13-12 with 5 regular season games remaining, it's going to be a very tall task, and would likely require a very deep run in the SEC tourney.

I love the Gamecocks and the fight they showed short handed last night, but we really don't deserve post season play. UNLESS we play like the team that beat Iowa State. Unfortunately we have not seen that team in a long time.

I think if -- IF! -- we can somehow beat A&M on Saturday, taking us to 14-12 overall, then we can start to feasibly think about pathways to an NIT (or even CBI) bid. Getting to 14-12, before traveling to play an Alabama team we have already beaten and then playing a mediocre Miss State team at home would be massive. It will be a tall order, I know. I expect A&M to be favored, even playing here.

Silagamecock, why would we not deserve post season play? If this team can somehow make a run and meet the criteria, I say they should accept a postseason bid from any tourney that offers. I just don't understand your thinking on this. You are probably one of the same guys who said our football team didn't deserve a bowl bid this past season.

NIT? Hell, we "CAN" Still make the DANCE! All we gotta do is win the freaking SEC tournament!

Should be pretty easy according to many of our posters who keep saying the SEC is a terrible conference! No accounting for the fact the SEC could put 5-6 teams in the dance and has the UNDEFEATED #1 TEAM IN THE NATION in our division... Sounds pretty simple right?

I used to make fun of the NIT myself, but the reality is that we haven't even sniffed an NIT in five years. It would actually be a nice stepping stone for our program at this time. It's one thing if you go to the NIT two years in a row after making the NCAA's like we did with Odom. That was a little disappointing even though we actually won them. However Martin needs to show progress so he can continue to recruit well. In our scenario an NIT bid would help recruits see we are making some strides.

Obvious answer - No - this team is no where close to being one to be considered for post season even if it's one of the buy in tournaments.

A&M = L
Arkansas = L
Miss State - 50/50

UT will win in Knoxsville
Bama - win for the Tide

If we can pull out 3 of the next 5 and win two in the SEC tournament I like our chances... looking at the current standings we have a reasonable shot at winning 2 especially if we end the year winning at least 3 more games... that should pit us against Mizzou in the first day then LSU or UGA on day 2.... LSU would be really challenging but we have hung with them in their place just couldnt pull it out.... and this team believes they can beat UGA anywhere...

Going 3-1 in the last 4 games might still leave us playing on the first day of the SEC tournament. If we win 2 games there, that might be enough to get us into the NIT.

Not even close. You've got to get close to 20 wins and do better in conference. This team is nowhere close to the two teams that one an NIT championship. Those teams had the same players on it that went to the NCAA tourney the year before and nearly won the SEC Tournament in 2006.
