Doty vs. Shaw

I wanted to try and put a little perspective (mainly this was for my own perspective after the disappointment yesterday) into Luke Doty's performance as a starter so far. For my exercise, I wanted to compare him to the QB whose skillset matches his own (at least in my lifetime), so I decided to look at Connor Shaw as a starter in 2011. I did add Georgia for Doty even though he didn't start, and I ignored Doty's starts last year as I feel that they have little impact due to circumstances of when he became the starter, and the fact that they were in a different system.

I was a bit surprised that Shaw didn't perform that far above where we have seen Doty thus far. You can even argue that Doty's circumstances around his injury, new scheme, and supporting cast make his performance even more admirable. The biggest difference, clearly, is rushing yards, which can be partially explained by Doty's injury (I still think he needs to work on his escape paths from the pocket). I also think that as our ground game starts to gain steam, that Doty's yards will increase on that front as well.

The side by side comparison gives me hope that if Doty can continue to improve, then we have a chance to really improve before the end of the season on offense. I also think that Satterfield will continue to get more comfortable calling plays for him, which will help him.

Some things that we should consider with this comparison:
  • Shaw was in year 2 in the same system
  • Shaw had Lattimore and Jeffrey as his RB1 (until Tennessee of course) and WR1 (can't forget Ellington as well)
  • Shaw had a full pre-season practice
  • Doty has been playing tentative in the run game due to his foot injury
I would like to have some civil conversation here, so please if you just want to hijack this as another Satterfield sucks thread, look at the numbers, and consider that maybe having an injured QB with little experience has been a limitation to this offense and what it can execute. If we come back at the end of the year and Doty doesn't have marked improvement, then maybe we can begin to talk about how Doty may not be the man for the job. For now, I just want to see our offense improve on a weekly basis.
