Eddie Floyd finally quits Board of Trustees, Governor picks Floyd's daughter to fill his role

Eddie Floyd, a member of the USC Boad of Trustees who graduated USC when Dwight Eisenhower was President, finally resigned his position from the USC board after serving for 40+ years.

Floyd, a member who has been seen napping at Board meetings, told the governor that he wanted his own daughter to take his place. McMaster fulfilled Floyd's wishes by quickly appointing her to the position stating, "no one else expressed interest."

Of course, no one outside of Floyd, his family, and McMaster and the governor's own advisors knew of Floyd's resignation so "interest" would have been very difficult to gauge.

McMaster, stated that this was temporary, and the legislature could choose to vote in someone else. Of course, McMaster also knows the Republican legislature is an automatic rubber-stamp for his preferences for appointed positions.

It is a certain fact that in Florence, SC there are a number of highly qualified USC graduates over the last 4 decades that would have been interested in serving in the role. Apparently, Eddie Floyd, Governor McMaster, and Floyd's daughter feel like this board position is a family inheritance.

This is why we will never be good at football and other sports. I wonder how many Board members are alum of other schools. I was told a tale long ago when I was young that we had Clemson alum in positions of power at USC and that was a main reason for our lack of success.

You have people like @Ward Jr arguing this a good season when we are about to go 6-6.

Why would the board care to be better when the fans are excited about being below average?

I don't think this is true.

An actual problem is that the legislature doesn't pass rules prohibiting board members from serving more than 12 years.

No board member anywhere should serve more than 12 years. It is a tragedy when someone serves for 40 years. An honorable human being would step down after a period of time to let other people serve- let others with different experience serve.

We have hundreds of thousands of USC alums, and certainly have thousands that are qualified and would be willing to serve.

I don’t know anything about the woman. I sure hope that she isn’t a sunshine pumper.

An honorable person would have refused the appointment given her dad had it for 40+ years.

An honorable person would have said, "Thank you for the offer but I really feel like there are other wonderful USC graduates in the Florence area that would be an outstanding board member that should serve. This is not a family position, but I am thankful for the offer."

Maybe she took it because there were three honorable seats open for honorable Florence-based USC grads to fill in they so desired?

Why don't you apply if this is a big ticket item for you?

Or is it just more virtue signaling because it fits your party affiliation gripe?

Eddie Floyd represented the 12th circuit (Florence, Marion). When he left- after 40+ years, there was one opening for that circuit on the board, not three.

Boards need a healthy turnover rate to keep fresh ideas and fresh perspectives on the board. The BOT is supposed to be service oriented and provide guidance for the University. That requires some level of turnover not people serving for almost half a century- who regularly fall dead asleep at board meetings as Eddie Floyd did and was known to do.

There was/is no application process. In this case, the replacement was appointed before anyone even knew there was an opening in a typical backroom process that serves no one well.

I don't live in any of the circuits where there is an opening. The board member for my area has only served for a short amount of time.

No, I don't need to serve. We need more board members in their mid 30s to mid 40s, not people my age. We have enough of them.

This is an important process and issue for many actual graduates of the University.

It sounds something similar to the way Kamala was chosen. :)

The article was clearly a University press release so I guess they and the board are good with it.

They went out of their way to mention the 3 board seats and the fact she's only there until the end of his current term.

Maybe it just buys them time to find a replacement?

I'm sure university leadership knows they have no control over it so there is nothing for them to do.

I'm not saying she's a bad choice. The process is awful. There was no requirement that Floyd be replaced immediately and certainly the governor could have waited 4-6 weeks and sought out other candidates for a temporary appointment. None of that happened.

No one should serve on a university board for 40 + years. No board member needs to be replaced by a family member.

If they are going to let people serve decade after decade, then make it a lifetime appointment with a clause for termination for cause included so they don't have to play the game of reappointing them every 4 years and wasting everyone's time- and wasting the time of others that might want to run for the position but never get a fair chance.
