Forbes, the WF Basketball Coach, is doing very well for the Deacons.

When it was announced Forbes was leaving ETSU and headed to WF, I posted on our board then, RT was missing a golden opportunity to fire FM and hire Forbes, and as it turns out that was the case. Before the NCAA Tournament was cancelled in March of 2020 Forbes would have probably had ETSU in the Sweet 16.

We just don't have the right people in charge to get our athletic programs to the level we deserve. Which is the understatement of the year.

Freddie, I have not been to a game yet in Freedom Hall with the new coach...I plan on going when Furman and Wofford come to Johnson City...I hope the vibe is the same...Freedom Hall has been the most exciting venue in the Southern Conference for men's basketball for years...
I'm planning on making a couple of games this year.

Maybe the biggest reach I have ever seen on GC.

So let me understand, a guy who may have had a team reach the sweet 16 (we'll never know) is a better hire than a coach who has taken two teams to the Sweet 16 and one team to the Final Four (and was a case of the Flu from winning it all)?
The lunacy on this forum never ceases to amaze.

Forbes is a Gregg Marshall guy. Literally all of the assistants under him that have become head coaches have become successful. Why not just hire the OG and be done with it?

YES...Forbes could not recruit at the level that Martin should be...His 3/2020 team would have taken us out behind the woodshed and beat the living daylights out of us....He will make Wake Forest a contender...I wish the guy was still in Johnson City at ETSU...oh well, Wakes gain...

He would probably have taken ETSU to the Sweetheart 16. ETSU has no where near the resources as USC. Yes, FM took USC to the Final Four one time and has never reached the playoffs before or since at USC. Forbes took ETSU to a couple of NCAA Tournaments in the four years (I think) he was there. FM has not been able to use the FF as a spring board. Do you kind of see the difference?
And BTW, USC was no where close to winning it all when they reached the FF that year.

You are absolutely correct. And sadly it is Wake's gain.

Unfortunately it’s become common to trash our mens basketball team on here. We’re going to be 10-3 in non conference and one of those losses was with half the team unavailable to play.

With the increased profile of the SEC as a basketball conference we will have a legitimate shot at the tournament with a .500 conference record.

You’d think we are 4-21 the way some people react around here.

Frank has had PLENTY of time to get us back in the tournament...Frank lost a lot of us years ago...Where are the High School McDonald's All-American's on our team....Dawn has them...why not Frank?

I think we have a bad basketball program under FM. Has the MBB team beaten a decent team this year? If FM has no better team than a .500 conference record then he needs to go, NCAA Tournament or not.

Womens basketball and mens are not even a good comparison. I guess Stanford and UConn and every other good womens team should be crushing it in mens basketball too.

This isn’t the typical SEC. Good teams will finish around .500 in conference this season and be on the bubble for the tournament.

We scheduled Georgetown and Florida State. FSU has been solid the last few years, but hasn’t looked the part this year. Georgetown is underperforming but did have a good win against Syracuse. It’s unfortunate what happened at Clemson, but the kids fought.

I just don’t get the kicking dirt on this team. What I hear on this board is they lose a bunch of games they shouldn’t. They lost to Coastal and Princeton. Princeton they shot horrible and still had a shot at the end. Coastal was bad from start to finish. However most every team in America has 1-2 of these types of games coming into conference.

I hear the kids have tuned Frank out. They held Clemsux to 30 points in the first half with a ton of backups playing. Some of those points were on a weak tech call on Frank. They played hard, just weren’t good enough with the situation handed.

What I still don’t get is why is it so hard to just support this team and let the chips fall where they may?

You are a nice poster and by no means am I here to argue with you. However, Martin has been to the NCAA Tournament one time. Forbes in four years tied for the SoCon one time and win it out right another time. FM has done nothing like that, yes they went to the FF one time. But with the resources USC has one would have to expect more. But even more than that, FM could not capitalize on the FF appearance.

I appreciate the kind words. You are a good poster on here as well and I enjoy reading your thoughts.

I’ll admit that I’m a little more emotionally attached to the mens basketball program than most on here….including the current regime (no I’m not Frank Martin…LOL).

Forbes is a really good coach. If we decide to cut ties with Martin, we could do worse.

I may be in the minority but I do believe this team can dance or be on the bubble come Selection Sunday. There are 5 top 25 teams in the SEC and Arky probably should be.

I really hope the support for this team ramps up in conference play. Realistically I think we win the rivalry game at full strength. I just think a lot of the fan base has thrown in the towel and I’m not sure if any performance on the court will change fan apathy at this point, which I think is unfortunate. It’s a new team, a new year and they are our Gamecocks.

Frank Martin has proven he can not recruit the talent required to create a top 25 program, plus he often acts as a total ass during the games. WE DESERVE BETTER.

This. You cannot compare the two.

Also, Forbes is not coming here. Why would he? He’s about to be relevant in the big 4 of Tobacco Road. Duke and UNC have new coaches that are unproven. NC State don’t scare anybody with their guy. Forbes is about to get rolling. You rule the big 4 you rule the ACC.

They're in good shape in the Big Two sports when it comes to coaching..
Wake‘s AD is the guy Tennessee ran off after he tried to hire Greg Schiano to replace Butch Jones. Phat Phil got the gig and arguably made a worse choice in Pruitt than John Currie had made with Schiano.

Currie inherited Clawson but does get a gold star for the Forbes hire.

We will see. UGA lost their best player, and Creen hasn't exactly been the basketball savior they were hoping for. Pretty much Wake has played a week schedule built for wins. Don't blame him with where Wakes program was when he took over. But sort of reminds one of the old glory days of Cliff Ellis at Clemson where they would line up a bunch of punching bags before the holidays and be 14-0 entering conference. Then struggle to make the tournament. Of course the ACC isn't what it was back in those days. Duke is the only team in the conference one would consider a power.
