Is Rattler the savior of Gamecock football? (Mentally prepared for the barrage of posters who will only read the title before responding)

not even close to Clowneys hype and status comimg in. JdC was a true program difference maker...elevated the entire team. SC likely will never have another player mean as much and generate that kind of interest from one single player again. There was a lot of magic during his time here....and much of it had to do with him.
I don’t agree. Clowney was absolutely much more anticipated in the sense that he was, after all, the most hyped and sought after recruit coming out of high school in a very long time.

But, as I noted above, we were already pretty good when he came on board, having been to the SECCG the season prior. And we already had a pretty good defense. Not great yet, but it was good. Clowney helped put our D over the top.

Rattler’s situation is very different. Not comparable at all. We are not a very good team right now. And it’s an understatement to say that the QB position was a complete and total mess last year. Rattler is being looked at to come in and elevate the single most important and visible position on the team.

Clowney was added to an already good D and made it great. Rattler is going to try to take something horrendous and make it good. The latter is a far bigger feat.

You are the only one I have seen who has mentioned Rattler being the savior.
To be fair, I don’t think anyone has actually said Rattler is the savior of the program. I just threw it out there for discussion. Of course, I could have used a lot of different terms in my title, but I chose “savior” because I knew it would generate a lot of strong opinions.

A new month, a new name ?

JDC is the most dominant defensive player most of us ever saw at HS and College. He was more than just a guy that got us over the top. For instance...I feel comfortable saying "we will absolutely never have a defensive player as good as he was again". I hate that....but he was unbelievable.

Rattler hasn't taken a snap in the SEC yet. He is coming from the west (AZ), to B12. Didn't pass go and see ACC defenses or even B10 defenses. He jumped into the deep end of the pool...I'm not worried about how well he can swim at all - I am just hopeful he can swim in these waters.

I agree with all of that.

I have both hopes and reservations about Rattler.

I don't think calling out your incompetence of being able to read, is acting like a child. Sorry if I hurt your feelings, little guy.
I entered the thread, and for some reason it went to the top of page two instead of page one. I did not realize this. Your post was the first on page two. Not knowing I was on page two. I thought this was your thread. It was a mistake on my part. Your anger seems a little over the top for something so trivial.

Hmm, must of touched a nerve.
NOBODY with the handle of Harvard Gamecock would have such poor grammar. You sir, are a phony, and most certainly did not attend Harvard! PS I'm into four servings of Pappies' and still know that "must of" instead of "must have" gave you away.

I'll let him speak for himself. But you've heard of talk-to-text and autocorrect, right? Those get ALL of us -- Ivy League or not.

Wasn't greenville tech called Harvard on th hill too? Maybe a long time ago?

Pretty sure it’s going to take more than him

but the plan looks like it’s coming together
We have more than him. Bell, Vann, Stogner , Samson, Lloyd, Carroll , transfer back from Wake, Tyler Banks,& Davis to name a few. Great defense returning. Pretty sure we got more than him.But he is our FIRST 5* QB! 😏. Let’s go!!!

Is he better than what we have had the past couple of years? Yes. Savior? Not even close. People need to temper expectations of this kid.
He was the worst QB of the Lincoln Riley era at OU and got benched for a freshman in his 3rd year in his system.
So now he is going to have a worse offensive coordinator, with much less weapons, a worse o line, going up against much better defenses.
So savior? Not even close.
Upgrade? very much so.
Perspective is what you make it I guess….”worse qb of the LR era? A few Heisman qbs and others to the nfl. He’s in good company. That’s like saying Eddie George is worse than Herschel and Big George

"got benched for a freshman in his 3rd year in his system." At least finish the quote. lol

I did not say he was bad. However, there are likely a mix of folks, some who see it as us bringing in a 5* QB and otbers who see Rattler as a QB who was benched in the Big 12.

Go look at his stats. Kelly Bryant got benched for Lawrence at moo u but played for a natty. Williams came in during Texas game, gave a spark. They let him start next game and he looked good so he kept the job. Williams then started coming back to the pack the minute teams had some film on him. Baylor says hello. Rattler was what…17-2 as a starter. Looks better than any qb we have had since Shaw. We got a big upgrade at qb. I love the way our “true fans” try to run him down before he takes a snap.

I played with one of the best RBs in the country at the time. He signed with UGA but every school inthe country wanted him. When he was a sophomore in came Herschel Walker and he lost the starting job. When Herschel was injured, this guy ran for 186 in a game. So he got benched as you would say…..did that mean he wasn’t a great talent still? He would have been a star on another team. Trask didn’t start in high school or then college until he was a junior at UF……guess he was a failure too.

Kelly Bryant played for a natty? Do you mean he was on the bench? They got curb stomped by Bama to got to the natty.
"Rattler was what…17-2 as a starter." 14-2...15-2 if you want to count the Texas game he started and was pulled down 28-7, and Caleb Williams brought them back to win.

Did you friend/guy you played with, make it to the league?

Trask? wtf you are just making random ass comparisons.

What are you expectations of Rattler and the offense next season?

My bad…Bryant only led them to the 4 team playoff so yeah, they had a chance. That teammate ended up getting his ass on his shoulders, leaving school and not finishing, and then got in bad trouble with the law. He sabotaged himself…but it’s a common tale.

Rattler may end up a dud here…..but you got to admit, with better qb play, we may have had 9 wins this year. My expectations are to have a qb that can throw a quick slant consistently and actually help our team. We have had it rough in that position since Shaw.

In my humble opinion Rattler will make us better. How good only time will tell. DJ was supposed to be the next great qb at Moo U. Saw where that story ended. The masses at Moo U have turned on DJ like he was the Benedict Arnold of Moo U. Not saying Rattler will be our savior, just saying he will make us better.

The Miz and Ky were def both winnable if we had better Qb play. Would have gotten us to 8 reg season. Would have put us in a better bowl (tougher opponent), so that win might not have been automatic.

I like Beamers approach to pound the transfer portal, we aren't going to have a 5 start coming out of hs commit to us...unless they grew up a diehard fan or something. So go get a qb who is ready to start now, try to showcase your offense, and hopefully later down the line, high profile hs recruits at qb will want to be apart of the program.
