Game Thread: Gamecocks vs. Illinois

The simplest answer is that the guys near the end are off the ball, therefore "in the backfield". I don't recall if they were or not.

Sellers should have had 119 yards rushing, but I suspect Shula's game plan prevented that.

If true, would that really be a bad thing?

My point being (said earlier), we need a passing Sellers next year. We can't rely on 3rd and long heroics all the time. He won't make a full year if we do.

And with our defense losing as much as it is, we will probably look to sellers and the offense to carry the load.

So maybe it was good practice for Sellers?

If our coaches are going to treat the bowl game as a glorified scrimmage, the fans need to be informed so they don't waste money on tickets, travel, hotel room, food, etc to be there.

Or time at home watching just to be sad and depressed bringing back old memories of losing every bowl game we ever played

Has it been discussed that Illinois coach wasn't making fun of Beams for the substitution stuff, he was calling him out on the fake fair catch on the kickoff trick play? Didn't realize the fake fair catch signal until a group text today. Very bush league and borderline dangerous.

What the hell is a fake fair catch?

It's not really fake. But when the kickoff receiver puts his hands out to side, he's supposedly signaling the ball will go behind him and to give up the play.

It's not official though, so our guy made that signal, a few players let up, and then we lateralled.

Their coach talked about it post game. Said it was "unwritten rule", so it wasn't necessarily illegal. But he took offense to it.

Yeah I don't think a team has ever faked it before. I actually thought it was illegal, b/c i have never seen it before. Def a bush league move.

Gotcha. Like he had anything to cry about. Taking 25 seconds to send in subs. But we definitely didn’t do anything to disarm that tactic. Like quit subbing and return the favor when they subbed. Smh

Got back late last night because of a late flight.

Orlando does a good job with the bowl. Numerous charter buses took fans from downtown to just outside the stadium.

I won't add any more about the game because all of that has been said but the bowl event was a lot of fun. Weather was good - overcast some but not blazing hot which was great.

Flyover before the game was fun and seeing the Goodyear Blimp floating over constantly was pretty cool.

Illinois fans that we encountered were nice and friendly at the game, at the hotel, and out and around Orlando before and afterwards.

The Camping World employees at the game were very friendly and helpful from the ticket people at the gates to the attendant in the bathroom making sure things were as clean as possible and that the paper towels were fully supplied.

Some of our fans around us were drunk in the stands. My father in law was seated next to one that never met an F word he didn't like. Thankfully, he drank enough that he kept having to go urinate- or throw up and wasn't around much after halftime. I was hoping he'd pass out right in his seat, but no luck. The women yelling "F this and F that" were also pretty disgusting too. But that's what you get these days. Thankfully, my noise cancelling headphones helped a lot.

but overall it was fun and a good experience. The band did a great job and represented well and that's the main reason we attended in person.

? They were all on the line
How do you know who is an eligible receiver?

You can have a guy on the line, but a step back, and he's officially in the backfield. Wr's do that all the time.

I don't recall if this alignment had that.

Also, I didn't look it up, but I know the rule changed several years ago. You used to have to have a certain number of people in the backfield. But some team scored with 10 men on the field. It was called back because they didn't have enough men in the backfield.

So they changed the rule to be something like you can't have too many in the backfield, but you can have less. Maybe it's just legal to have less players in the backfield?
