Apathy has set in for free pass Frank's team.

20 post on the thread from last night's game. Normally 2-3 pages of post. I didn't even realize we played last night.

UT had the #3 recruiting class in the country last year. They play with a purpose because they know they are going to the playoffs.

I want Frank to stay if he can give it 100%. If he can't then it is time for him to move on. My worry is he will stay, but will only be able to give it 60-70% effort. That's not good enough.

That part is Ray Tanner's job to figure out and discuss it with Frank and the BOT.

You've been on here long enough to know recruiting rankings don't matter at all. I mean they matter everywhere else but here. Results are also secondary here. We pay for life coaches. I'm honestly shocked we didn't hire Butch "brick by brick" Jones to be the head football coach.

Ray hasn’t figured out much when it comes to hiring coaches for the men’s programs, IMO.
We’ll see how his football hire turns out. AThe last on was a disaster. His first baseball coach hire was a disaster, his second baseball coach hire is very much in question now. He didn’t hire Frank but has tolerated him for five years since the final four run. Track and field, soccer are not even worth mentioning. Golf is ourbest men’s program, maybe.

Does anyone really care anymore? The basketball situation is currently so pathetic, that I stop watching after just a few minutes as it becomes apparent what the outcome will be. I have pulled for the Gamecocks for 60 years, and I have finally had enough! It appears the only folks who REALLY care about Carolina sports are the fans and no one else. If anyone else really cared, the program would not be as dismal as it is.

I don't understand how people can't see the decline of Men's Basketball.
If Lawson leaves we not only wont have a functional point guard but we won't have a SEC shooting guard. Next February we will be having this conversation again.

I know he's not ready but it's very possible that Bryant leaves. He may very well benefit more from the g league vs another year of college. Can you imagine this team next year without Bryant and Lawson? Another free pass year for Frank.

Bryant is an electrifying dunker but he just is too inconsistent of a shooter to play at the next level....and by next level I mean the developmental league.

Butch didn't have any Columbia voices telling everyone he was a nice guy like Beamer did. And Beamer might have been cheaper. Those seemed to be the driving priorities in that search

I disagree. Does he need a ton of work? Absolutely. Is he going to get it at USC? Probably not. In my opinion, the potential is there.

You’re free to disagree. You may prove right. Only time will tell but he’s only shooting 22 % from long range this season and that’s at the college level. Push that line back and put a better defender in front of him and I have a hard time believing that goes up, even with development. The reality is the number of guys that have gone pro from our program in the last 25 years is pretty small. If anyone plays at the next level it’s Lawson and even he has his work cut out for him.

Covid or no covid, this team has done/is doing what all of Frank's teams have done here; Lose to teams they should NOT lose to at the most inopportune times; slip up and inexplicably beat a team they had no chance of beating; and losing just enough (or plenty enough) down the stretch to play themselves out of post-season contention. 9 years in, it is what it is. I have no hope for improvement or anything different.

Yes, apathy. I have no hope and dwindling interest.

Have lost interest, also, but I do record the games but only watch if GCs win. Haven't watched many GC games this year. Have watched BYU and Gonzaga a lot.

I don't expect to win and I doubt if FM or the team does. It's time to move on with a new MBB coach.

I agree with the general tone of what you say. And that’s not to say I disagree with the specifics, My response is why are we paying Coach &3.3 million per year for these results? Why doesn’t the President, AD and Board fix this problem. Think about the abuses in salary, contract extension, and buyouts this last year just in the football and basketball programs. I’m guessing for 6 wins thus far his year combined in these two sports we have paid Muschamp and Martin right at $20 million dollars!!!!

You are so right Vienacocks. I suspect the only people talking USC basketball are a few here and 107.5, which I guess has to chat it up.

There's really nothing to talk about. He's going nowhere, and the team's going nowhere. And that, is that.

Get well Frank!!!!, the only remaining story this season.

You expect Magoo to actually make an intelligent decision?

LOL.

That is expecting a lot. When it comes to the basketball program, it would be a first.

The larger issue is Magoo trying to conduct a basketball search. LOL.

We’re better off with Frank until we can start getting rid of the disease.

To be fair the main difference in lumping the two together is Muschamp had been with the team all year (until we fired him) and they played all of their games. If football had half of their games cancelled you might could make the argument Will Muschamp is still around.

Frank Martin is a good coach, but it’s probably time for him to move on. It’s hard to hold him responsible for this season when it is clear:
1. He has missed significant time coaching his team this season due to 2 separate Covid instances (and there may be more that we don’t know)

2. The team literally didn’t play for an entire month. I’m not sure anyone understands how difficult that is. Basketball is about timing and it’s hard to keep that sharp without game action.

I get the frustration. We do a lot of stupid things. I expected better with the experience we have, but this is also a season like no other. The reality is the contract is likely bringing Frank back but we did pull the plug on Muschamp so I guess we will see....

There are good reasons related to the pandemic for the basketball team to struggle. Look no further than some of the great programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. Coach has good reasons every year not related to the pandemic. He is what he is and if USC and it’s fans are ok with it...so be it.
As a long time fan and at times over the years a financial contributor, I would just as soon part ways with Frank and his style, hire some good young coach, give him five years and save a few dollars.

You seem very reasonable. I don’t doubt that it’s probably time to cut ties. I hope he just gets a better offer and goes. It would be a better look for both sides.

Thank goodness clemson bounced back from covid and will make the NCAA tourney. We must have struggled more with covid I guess.

Just curious. Are you saying that you would not have hired Holbrook as baseball coach? That was a no brainer that just did not work out.

One is judged by their performance and results. Who knows what one would have done unless or until they are in the position to make the decision. The hiring of Holbrook turned out to be a disaster. Ray made the hire knowing all the facts.

Don't get me wrong. I am not defending Tanner but Holbrook was a no brainer. I didn't hear of anyone having an issue with this hire. Good non-answer to my question, though.

I don’t think I’d have hired Chad. I don’t think he was the “no brainer” many like to think he was, either. He was the hot assistant with an offer from Tennessee. We were one of the top 3 jobs in the country. We could have found a proven winner at a high level who was interested in coming to Columbia.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t remember Ray conducting a search. It felt like his decision was already made, which, if true just points out how inept and administrator he is.
If he conducted a thorough search and still came away thinking Chad was the best option, then so be it. He swung and missed. But I don’t think that happened. Not surprisingly, when he was preparing to replace Chad, Ray stated that an experienced head coach was a priority. Her, maybe 5 years too late, plus we aren’t nearly the draw now we were in 2012.

Of course. With hindsight is very easy to say you would not have hired Holbrook. Tanner would have been severely castigated had he not hired him at that moment.

Some around here say Frank is a great coach. I disagree. Let me remind you Horn went to the Sweet 16.

You never know. Things can change once a player only has basketball to work on. I personally watched Gerald Wallace go from a College player that may have had the ugliest jump shot in the history of college basketball to an NBA All-Star in Charlotte within 5-6 years. Shot was still ugly, but he found a way for enough of them to go in until you had to respect it. He was a couple inches bigger than Bryant and just as athletic.

Yes, apathy. I have no hope and dwindling interest.
Just wondering..with all of the "blame it on China virus"..does anyone know, not anecdotally speaking, of ONE college athlete having died of the China virus?? And please spare me the old "one is too many" bromide.

But Holbrook was the hottest assistant coach in College Baseball at the time

A certain number of posters just want to hate on Tanner without knowing or caring what is actually going on. There was a reason Napier asked to be hired before he was "officially" interviewed for the poosition....he had already been in long negotiations through backchannels with someone and wanted to know who he would be working for. Seems he found out it wasn't the individual he'd been communicating with.

We have regressed back to the Holderman days.

Why, if a person is critical of the performance of someone, is that person accused of hating the other person!?

Because there is no acknowledgment for all the good things he has done while AD (which are actually more important to the program as a whole) and concentrate on one of the most unpredictable and risky aspects of his job...the one that no AD has been completely successful at.
