I'll never blame Tanner for hiring Holbrook. It was a completely defensible choice.Of course. With hindsight is very easy to say you would not have hired Holbrook. Tanner would have been severely castigated had he not hired him at that moment.

Are you trying to say that Tanner is not a baseball man or that he should not have hired Holbrook?Maybe, but you’d think a beisbol man would have a pretty good idea after sharing the dugout for a number of years with the guy.
I’m saying neither. What I am saying is that you’d think Tanner would have had a better handle. Are you trying to say that Tanner is not a baseball man or that he should not have hired Holbrook?
I know! How was Ray not able to predict the future? I mean, its so obvious 5 years later.I’m saying neither. What I am saying is that you’d think Tanner would have had a better handle.
Well, you felt inclined to respond..although I do not see where the post was political in any way. Are you aware of any deaths of college athletes attributable to the China virus? Or were you just inclined to comment without facts? Huh?We almost got through a good sports thread without a political diatribe. Well, so much for that.
What does China virus or whatever you call it have to do with basketball. It’s a political talking point and you know it.Well, you felt inclined to respond..although I do not see where the post was political in any way. He had a pretty good idea that Holbrook was his clone. Holbrook even sounded like Tanner.Maybe, but you’d think a beisbol man would have a pretty good idea after sharing the dugout for a number of years with the guy.
The discussion involved the impact that the China virus (originated in China, you see, thus the China virus) has had on the basketball season. Of course, you seem like a typical Biden guy, so it's great that your guy says he will bitch stomp the virus, so that'll be great! What does China virus or whatever you call it have to do with basketball. It’s a political talking point and you know it.
Yes and further more as AD he could continue to guide, influence, and help keep the baseball program on top nationally at the same time looking out for his “friend”. Ray should have known that Holbrook was not head coach material.Maybe, but you’d think a beisbol man would have a pretty good idea after sharing the dugout for a number of years with the guy.
I get it that nobody can guarantee the future, but isn’t the mark of a great AD the ability to run a successful program? Tanner has done exactly 2 things. He has prosecuted a plan created by someone else, and has not shown he has the chops to hire a great coach. Time will tell on Beamer, but as we sit here today, that’s the record of the current AD. Color me extremely unimpressed and unsurprised that our men’s programs are in the crapper.I know! How was Ray not able to predict the future? I mean, its so obvious 5 years later.
So what is the excuse for other schools having good years. Every program to varying degrees has been impacted by COVID.This season is screwed. COVID made sure of that. Give it a rest
Just speculation on my part, but I agree I highly doubt Miami hires Martin. If you're on the board you have to ask yourself this question, "If he cant win in the SEC, what makes anyone think he will do better in the ACC ?"
Interesting, Don't know anything about this source, saw it posted on TOS. I highly doubt Miami hires him. New Mexico could be interesting, but I think it would be in Martin's best interest to take a job that recruits itself.
That’s all you believe he’s done in 9 years?I get it that nobody can guarantee the future, but isn’t the mark of a great AD the ability to run a successful program? Tanner has done exactly 2 things. I am going to have to agree with Sumpta. The question was asked for any knowledge of the virus killing one player. There is no political point to that just as there would be no political point asking how many blue cars were on I-26 today. It is a request for information. If something is seen as political in that request, it is because the person calling it political is looking to make everything political. The discussion involved the impact that the China virus (originated in China, you see, thus the China virus) has had on the basketball season. AD is responsible for a whole helluva lot more than that....whole helluva lot more. And those plans had been sitting for a while....you may want to figure out how and why they finally got off the planning table.I get it that nobody can guarantee the future, but isn’t the mark of a great AD the ability to run a successful program? Tanner has done exactly 2 things. He has prosecuted a plan created by someone else, and has not shown he has the chops to hire a great coach. There is a quote about bliss. That’s all you believe he’s done in 9 years?
Nah Bubba. The subject was about how the virus has negatively impacted our basketball season. A discussion ensued about Basketball and the AD and Mr. Sumpta jumps in about sports related virus deaths that no one was talking about. I know I am not keeping any records on that and probably most of the other posters weren't either. So, it was just a nonsensical question to inject politics in a topic that was strictly related to how our season was impacted. .....and if you just out of the blue asked me how many blue cars were I-26 today, I would say what the heck was that to you to. LOL!!!I am going to have to agree with Sumpta. The question was asked for any knowledge of the virus killing one player. Every coach is judged by his/her record. As the saying goes, you are what your record says you are. Frank has made the Dance once in 9 years. Anyone defending that is justifying failure for the sole reason he is the SC coach. That’s all you believe he’s done in 9 years?
Ok but I’m not talking about Frank.Every coach is judged by his/her record. As the saying goes, you are what your record says you are. Frank has made the Dance once in 9 years. Anyone defending that is justifying failure for the sole reason he is the SC coach.
You must be talking about Ray, correct?Ok but I’m not talking about Frank.
I think Caslen is making the hiring decisions now. He has sublime confidence in his ability to recognize great leaders. Ray is on the back end of his AD career and will stay 2-3 more years to raise money and finish his projects. But I doubt he's making these calls anymore. You must be talking about Ray, correct?
So how does one judge the performance of an AD....I suppose it boils down to what the President is satisfied with or maybe in a lot of cases what a powerful board member is unhappy with.
Some on here, myself included, have a lot of respect for and like Ray Tanner. He won two national championships, almost a third, and had the baseball program at or near the top of the NCAA baseball world. But, at that time, and for whatever reason, he and President Pastides decided it was time to move on or up(?).
While the Athletic Department has made great strides in a lot of areas, the face of the program, the sports that produce much f the revenue needed to operate the entire department have failed, miserably, IMO.
I contend that while the Athletic Department is in overall good financial condition by all reports, that the primary reason for that is not the astute management by Ray Tanner or his staff, namely Charles (?) whatever his name is. But is due to the lucrative funding by the SEC! It is hard to fail with that support.
Bottom line is this, again in my opinion. We need an athletic director that has the ability to hire competent coaches for our men’s programs. Thank Ray for his great accomplishment as a baseball coach and his positive contributions as AD and create a position for him until he can retire.
If we were in poor financial position would you blame Ray?You must be talking about Ray, correct?

Depends on whether he made poor decisions....If we were in poor financial position would you blame Ray?
Depends on whether he made poor decisions....
He has business people surrounding him that advise him on all sorts of business decisions. I’m saying that business decisions are normally backed up by strict analysis of numbers, ratios, cash flows, and risk analysis by people who analyze all those factors. So, yes as the man that recommends financial factors to the board for final approval he has been successful. I don’t call that dumb luck. I do call that a collaborative effort by knowledgeable people who have analyzed many factors not the least of which is an abundance of cash flow provided by the SEC.I see. So you don't credit him for making good decisions, or is it just dumb luck?
