Gamecocks Make Change in Swimming and Diving Program

Wow. Gamecock football and MBB stink so much that Ray got up and fired the swim coach!
It's like transferred aggression with animals. I had a cat who got upset when he spotted through the window a neighborhood cat passing in the yard. Since my cat couldn't get to the cat in the yard, he attacked our other cat who was standing beside him at the window.

Not to make light of this, but we have some very good swimmer's and a local swimmer from Dreher HS that made All-State in her Freshman year in HS for 4-A and placed 1st in two events the 500 free and 100 back. Her father coach Mason with the Carolina Rugby team.

I can see us do what Vandy did and keep the women's swim team and get rid of the men's team. But there was some talk back in October that Tanner was looking to cut programs and the Swim team was one of them. I believe Tanner will be forced to keep the swim program because of the SEC.

I don't think Tanner wants to cut any sport it's just the possibility was out there due to so much lost revenue. The swim team at USC has had a lot of great individuals, men and women, but just not enough greats for the team to be among the SEC elite with the money programs like Florida. And it's not likely that USC will ever be elite in swimming because of money etc (similar to football).

But, from everything I heard about the the swim coach at USC, he was a good guy who was well liked by the athletes and was good in the community. I had met him a few times as my daughter competed locally at some meets there. Seemed like a good fellow.

In terms of cutting sports, if it ever came down to it... the no brainer to save money is equestrian. It's not even an NCAA sport and taking care of horses ain't cheap! Of course with title IX, you'd have to kill a men's sport, too, so maybe that's where men's swimming would come in. Although it would make more sense to drop men's soccer since it's not at SEC sport - USC's men compete in conference USA and I think the men's soccer coach who has been there forever is retiring this year.

Hopefully nothing gets cut though.

Now that football is coed in the SEC, I think we have to cut the women sports. Ha

That was mean, I hope you had a talk with your cat for being so aggressive.

Next up track.

Well, if Furman axed baseball and men's LAX, which has been discussed, and discussed well on FGF, who knows.

Auburn is the kingpin of SEC swimming.

If you need to cut a program, I would cut beach volleyball since USC already has a long-established women's volleyball team.

Never cut beach volleyball!!!

I would be very unpopular at UofSC, but the obvious choice to cut is mens soccer. It is not an SEC sport and zero talk about it becoming one. Languishing in CUSA for mens soccer has practically killed our recruiting anyway and it has turned into just another mens sports that we lose to Clempson in every year. With us in a mediocre or worse conference and the other instate school playing in one of the premiere mens soccer leagues, we will probably continue to lose to them.

Beach Volleyball is a no brainer to keep. Athletes overlap and that helps both programs.

If it’s a just money thing, football loses more $ than any other sport.

Football spends more than any other sport. But when one considers the money generated, especially by SEC TV contract, it is the cash cow. Men's basketball the same on a lesser basis. Any Olympic type sport is in reality a waste of money, but you have to have many of them, especially women's sports, to satisfy Title IX. I'd dump equestrian in a minute. Isn't cheap keeping those horses up. In the Title IX area, I actually thought Clemson did the smartest thing with their women's rowing team. Put a bunch of folks on scholarship and all you have to build is a little boat house. And they just recruit high school athletes with great grades to prop up their athletic GPA. And as long as nobody drowns nobody cares about their record. The Corp of Engineers built their stadium and practice fields for free. I'd cut a bunch of stuff and stick a rowing team out on Lake Murray

How do the ACC schools offer more men sports than the SEC? Men's soccer and lacrosse are 2 ACC sports the SEC doesn't have.

UK is also in CUSA in men's soccer and they field a good team ranked No.7 when I searched.

I don't think the ACC offers more sports, just a different mix. For example, many SEC schools offer gymnastics.
