Interesting that we claim him as one of South Carolina's sons when he, in fact, was from Virginia and didn't move to SC until after the French & Indian War.
Very true, but they did put him in prison and when he got out, settled in South Carolina.
Here is where he gained his fame, and chose to marry and live here the rest of his life. I think South Carolina has a good argument that at least he was an adopted son.
 
Maybe Jeopardy should have dropped the UofSC moniker in the clue. Doesn't everybody, worldwide, know what that represents?

A while back there was a question about clemson and none of them knew it was in SC.

He fought the British in SC. While a resident of SC is where he obtained all of his notable fame including the nickname "The Fighting Gamecock". He didn't choose to be born in Virginia. He did choose to live and fight for freedom in SC.
