Garcia is quite passionate about Beamer getting the job here

I do not dislike Garcia. Yet, I can't help but imagine what could have been for him and the school. He had a lot talent and swagger, but lacked discipline (and may have had other challenges that we do know about). It takes a lot more than talent to succeed at the highest levels of college and professional football. We (especially Gamecock fans) all know talented people who never made it realized their potential on the field.

I think Tanner may be swayed by arguments from former players. Caslen likely would not.

Hate him all you want, Tanner is 100% Gamecock, through and through. On top of that, he was a coach. And he probably knows all of these players to some degree since they were all here at the same time. So I think passionate pleas from former players would tug on him.

Caslen is the new guy in town and has no connection to these guys. Besides, he's a military guy through and through and they make calculated decision, not emotional ones.
[/QUOTE Ray and the General are not who we need to hire the right person for this job. Unfortunately, they will make the call and we all hope it works out.

Steven Garcia.....I could care less what he says. In fact my only question for Garcia is still about his play against Auburn in Columbia the year USC probably had its best team. And that loss was on him. I couldn't figure out if he had the shakes as maybe Spurrier had come down on him and made him quit drinking, a girl broke his heart, or if he was shaving points. The way he played that game, versus his other games with USC was just out of whack.

Garcia had some help having his career ruined. Hyman putting a "no alcohol" provision on a 21 year-old was ridiculous. It's interesting that Hyman's next stop was TEXAS A&M and he never put any restrictions on Johnny Manziel. A whole lot more "knucklehead behavior" from Johnny Football without a whiff of a suspension.

Say what you want about Garcia, but we beat some great teams on the way to the SEC championship game with Garcia under center.

One thing I question is how much importance to place on the opinions on our former players. How many former players do we have that were on SEC championship or national championship teams? If our goal is to get to that level, we don't have any former players who know what it takes. Should we listen to former players? Sure, their input is valued. Perhaps it shouldn't be too big a factor, though.

No offense to Garcia but why would be excited about is opinion? I like him but didn't he basically throw his career away?
Garcia was also very excited about his next drink of alcohol after the one he was then currently holding. Cost us a few games. So couldn’t care less what he thinks

um, ok, who is this?

Garcia was tough as nails. He took some really hard hits and never really flinched. But as far as passing the ball, he was a one trick Alshon pony. Not really sure he has a great understanding of offense and what it takes to coach it. And has he matured? Has he ever had a real job? I think he more or less gives QB lessons.

Yeah, but please explain why SO MANY former players feel the same way. Latt, Shaw Alshon, Ingram, Swagg. Guys the understand what is need to excel in the SEC. Why would they put their name on a guy that's not capable. Lattimore walked away from what he perceived to be e negative situation. Help me understand why these guys would be poor judges of what is need in a head coach

My gut tells me Napier or Freeze tied for #1 and then Beamer a close second. Also very important, which of my top 3 is likely to bring in the best staff?

Not ridiculous in Garcia's case. His problem wasn't alcohol per se; it was his behavior after drinking.

So Garcia wasn't kicked off the team for merely having failed the alcohol test, it was his behavior prior to the test. Just what was that behavior and did it come anywhere close to the behavior of Manziel that Hyman ignored? Be specific: date and incident.

It's kind of funny. When he was here, I was pretty hard on him for the knucklehead things he did, and I was always getting shouted down by other posters telling me they were no different when they were in college and this was typical college kid shenanigans and such. Now everyone wants to hold that stuff against him.

I still think he was a total knucklehead, but he's 32 now, so I can assume he's probably matured at least a little bit.

Plenty of 32 yo knuckleheads out there.

His track record of drinking and the resulting behavior is well documented. It may have reached "final straw" time.

If you're too lazy to look up his numerous incidents, too bad. Doesn't make it not true, and I'm not of a mind to pretend you don't already know and go to the trouble of googling old news stories.

I know the USC admin backed up his actions regarding Garcia. IDK anything about his level of power at A&M. and/or his backing from the administration if he wanted to take action against Manziel. Manziel's family was pretty powerful, IIRC.

Yes, I'm aware of Garcia's behavior and for the most part the incidents pale in comparison to Manziel. Garcia's last suspension prior to the alcohol test was over him leaving a Life seminar put on by Hyman's wife. The speaker was using Garcia as an example of how not to behave if you want to get ahead in life. So the alcohol test was pretty much a payback for that. The fact that it was administered the week his grandfather died was pretty crappy.

When Manziel got into a drunken brawl and arrested Hyman floated the idea of suspending him for the season (last straw being mentioned), the donors told Hyman they wouldn't permit it, he opted for the first half of an inconsequential game.

Still don’t see death. Maybe that’s just me.

As I suspected, no power to do anything with Manziel at A&M.

As I suspected, no power to do anything with Manziel at A&M.
Had the same power as he had at USC. Like most bullies he has no bedrock principles. He'll push until somebody goes toe-to-toe with him. Garcia went along with the "behavior contract", went to counseling, cut his hair, shaved his beard; Manziel and the fan base at A&M told Hyman to back off and he caved.

Hyman missed his calling, he should move to a blue state and run for governor.

I see your throw and give you the ref tackle

“Well, I didn’t run into the ref,” Garcia told SB Nation. “He literally tackled me.”

“It was a zone-read,” Garcia said, recalling the play. “So the running back was on the lefthand side. We’re in shotgun. I read the defense, and I pulled it. I’m getting ready to run into the end zone, and this frickin’ guy kinda shuffles and lowers his right shoulder right into me.”

“I’m sitting on my butt, and I look at him — and I can’t really tell you what I told him,” Garcia said.

Luckily, Garcia did tell me what he actually said.

“I was like ‘what the **** are you doing?’” Garcia said. “I was like ‘what the ****, this is bullshit! I’m getting ready to run it in!’”

He adds that he remembers one of his teammates having to bring him away from the ref.

"If you look at the play, I think it was Jarriel King, who was our left tackle, and he was like ‘hey G man, calm down, man!’” Garcia said. “I was pretty pissed off because I was getting ready to run it in. There was like a safety or somebody back there that could’ve made the only other tackle, and I probably outweighed him by like 30 pounds, so I wasn’t gonna get stopped on that deal. But this damn — that ref came out of fricking nowhere and fricking drilled me.”"
