1. 6️⃣8️⃣ Countdown to kickoff: 68 days!

Our countdown to South Carolina's 2019 season opener against North Carolina in Charlotte is now down to just 68 days so the next player on our countdown is redshirt freshman offensive lineman Wyatt Campbell.

Campbell was a three-star prospect from nearby Lugoff-Elgin High School in the 2018 class. A Shrine Bowl selection, Campbell battled a knee injury after his senior year of high school that limited him in spring practice at South Carolina.

Campbell had surgery to repair his knee and spent most of the fall catching back up. Finally healthy, he has the opportunity to challenge for a role in 2019.

2. Commitment Corner: TE Nick Muse

South Carolina continues to add players to its future roster this summer and the latest is William and Mary tight end transfer Nick Muse, who announced his intentions to join the program on Saturday.

Bio: 6-foot-5, 240-pounds. 30 catches for 453 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore. All-CAA third ream selection. Belmont (N.C.) South Point High graduate.

Recruiter of record: Bobby Bentley

Offers: LSU, N.C. State and East Carolina.

Why South Carolina? "South Carolina was the perfect fit for me! I really enjoyed talking to both Coach (Will) Muschamp and Coach (Bobby) Bentley about how I can make a difference and how excited we all were that I made the trip down there! Feels great to know who I will be playing for and seeing how I can help in any way! #SpursUp!"

More to know: Muse has three years to play two to as a transfer. He would be required to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules if he's not granted a waiver by the NCAA.

3. Recapping two official visits

South Carolina hosted two official visitors on its campus this weekend prior to the beginning of an NCAA dead period on Monday that limits schools from hosting prospects.

Here's the latest on both targets.

WR Deajaun McDougle

South Carolina already has two wide receivers committed for the 2020 class and they'd love for the third to be McDougle, the Deerfield Beach (Fla.) standout. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder, who was hosted by former teammate Rosendo Louis on his visit, had eyed August for a decision, but he's decided to push that back now. McDougle hopes to also take officials to Ohio State, Oregon, Purdue and Maryland before making a decision.

DB Joey Hunter

Hunter, a three-star standout from Tyrone, Ga.'s Sandy Creek High, gave the weekend strong reviews in what was his final visit prior to his July 2 decision date. Hunter, who was hosted on his trip by freshman defensive back Jammie Robinson, is seen as a cornerback or nickelback in the Gamecocks' scheme. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder has Futurecast predictions for the Gamecocks from both Chris Clark and Wes Mitchell.

5. This Date in Gamecock History

June 20, 2002 – With a berth in the College World Series championship game on the line, the Gamecocks blasted Clemson, 10-2, eliminating the Tigers behind a complete game from pitcher Steven Bondurant.

  • The lefty from the Charlotte area scattered eight hits, allowing just a run in the third and one in the ninth.
  • USC got on the board first, putting up three runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Landon Powell and an RBI single from Kevin Melillo.
  • The Gamecocks added two more in the third as Trey Dyson reached on an error by Tiger SS Khalil Greene and scored on a wild pitch and Garris Gonce singled and eventually came home on a single by Brian Buscher.
  • Carolina really blew it open in the eighth, scoring five runs to push the lead to 10-1. Justin Harris got things going with a double and all the runs scored with two outs. Gonce had a two-run single, Powell brought another home by drawing a walk with the bases loaded and Melillo scored two more on a single to right.
  • Clemson scored one in the ninth and had the bases loaded, but Bondurant got Greene to fly out to Tim Seaton for the final out.
  • USC advanced to play Texas in the championship game with the victory.

6. Birthdays!

Stan Stasica – Before there was Steve Wadiak, Carolina had another great halfback from Illinois, albeit briefly, in Rockford’s Stan Stasica. He attended Gordon Military Junior College in Barnesville, Georgia, after high school before joining the Gamecocks. Stasica was an instant hit as a sophomore, being named all-State and all-Southern Conference and was three times (vs. UNC, Clemson and Furman) the Southern Conference Sophomore of the Week before eventually being named Sophomore of the Year. He had a 66-yard touchdown run that provided the margin of victory in a 13-7 win over UNC, threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Gus Hempley for Carolina’s only score in a 6-6 tie with Wake Forest and threw two touchdown passes in an 18-14 win over Clemson. Stasica would be named honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press at the end of the season. He also played basketball for the Gamecocks but then left school to serve in the Army. After his time in the military Stasica enrolled at Illinois. He went on to play professionally with the Miami Seahawks of the All-American Football Conference and the Regina Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Stasica passed away in Colorado in July 2012.
