Back in the 1970s, there was a Longhorn announcer at the game tasked with reporting over the loud speaker the scores of other games. Mostly Southwest Conference or national games. But he always reported the Slippery Rock score. Soon huge cheers for Slippery Rock scores occurred, as that year they were winning whatever little conference they were in. Cheers as big as A&M getting beat by someone. There was a big push to schedule Slippery Rock in an out of conference game. It never happened as cooler heads intervened, but it almost did. Simply because their name sounded funny.
