I didn't see the game but is UConn really that good or what? *

UConn is always that good. It's hard to believe the talent difference between his team and others. I asked myself if anyone on our team would start for UConn.

Yes. They have a 6'4" center that is the most athletic big girl I recall ever seeing. Ibiam, Coates, nor Wilson had any answer for her.

They also had a chunky butt that could hit from anywhere in the gym.

Those 2 were the difference.

UCONN was clearly the better team and South Carolina isnt there yet. I do think its worth saying that the referees clearly favored the home team which is evident just looking at the disparity in free throw attempts. That ham beast they had that was hot behind the 3 point line was getting away with pushoffs all night.

Additionally, they hit 73% of their three pointers for the game. They cooled off in the second half, LOL, because in the first half they were hitting 83% of their three pointers. I don't follow UConn basketball, but find it very hard to believe they hit shots at that pace game after game. But yes, they dominated inside, outside, everywhere.

They will be just as tough next year. Don't lose much and are bringing in the No. 1 player. She's a 6-3 sharpshooter.

If Staley wants to move the next level, she has to find her own sharpshooters.

"The next level" meaning national champions? Because there aren't too many levels beyond where we currently are, lol. Only one level, by my measure, and UConn is currently on it.

It's interesting you mentioned refs. I'm not sure how much difference the foul disparity made, but they showed one high light after the game where "chunky girl" literally elbowed one of our girls to the floor, and then hit a three. Man, I tell ya, if that wasn't a foul I don't know what is. Also, did anyone notice towards the end of the game, when it was clearly over, that the refs started calling more fouls in our favor. I viewed it as an effort to close the fouls called gap for the final stats. Anyway, don't think it would have mattered UCONN is a great team.

UCONN put on a coaching clinic last night...Great defense without fouling...some home court advantage maybe, but would have made little difference. The players knew exactly what to do on every possession. Our players looked baffled and discouraged most of the game...

Re: Our team is not even close to the same level as the UConn team.****

Right now we could play UConn 10 times in Columbia and not beat them once.

Re: Our team is not even close to the same level as the UConn team.****

Carolina is an excellent women's basketball team but UConn is a superior women's basketball team. We can still win the SEC and still go deep in the NCAA's but we can't beat that UConn team. Now if we get them in the Final Four down in Tampa and they shoot 45% from the field and 35% from 3 then we have a shot but they won't come close to losing another game if they shoot like that. It was ridiculous.

It's UCONN's world and everyone else is just playing for second...very impressive display last night. At least Staley knows where they stand and what they need to do.

Why not give U Conn the trophy now and save the rest of the teams the effort? They played well, but as their coach said 4 of their girls played their best game all year. Yes, there was home cooking. I watched the last half replay and found at least 20 bad calls in just that half. They were ranging from no fouls called on them, to no call on walking on them, to bogus fouls called on us. I don't think they could beat us 10 out of 10 times when playing here unless given the ref advantage.

I disagree with those who say we can't play with them. Home court makes a huge difference and even though we were ranked #1 this was a new setting for our team. You get better when you face this type situation and I think we react well.

I am not saying we beat them but think our chances on a neutral court are much better. Their crowd got going and they were playing out of their minds.

That is the great thing about basketball, one game doesn't end season, we can still make a title run.

Their coach admitted that they "played incredibly well". They shot the lights out in in every phase of the game. When they do that, they are unbeatable. But they don't alway do that. We will play them again this year. We will see then.

UCONN was a machine. However, I do believe on a neutral court it would be a more competitive game. They had every intangible that you could think of on their side last night. If we were to meet again in the tournament at a neutral setting, I think we would have the "intangible" edge. In no way am I saying we would win, because you still have to put the ball in the hoop, and they do that very well, but I don't believe they would shoot nearly as well as they did last night. I also believe our approach, both mental and game planning, would be different.

Heres hoping fora final four or championship rematch…...

They are essentially a college All Star team. Every year they pretty much have a roster full of McDonalds All American star players from all over the country. We have some too but they have them year in and year out. Their roster probably doenst have one player from state of Conn. I would bet they are from Calif etc. Hard to compete unless you recruit at that level.

Amazing they are able to recruit nationally like they do. I know they have the sports best coach and great tradition and play for championships every year but my gosh their conference sucks. Would you really want to go where you play East Carolina's in your conference and win by 40 every game. Dawn needs to continue to recruit nationally like she did with Cuevas and the committed girl from Canada. Only then will we be able to hang with UCONN who has starters from Texas, Illinois, New York and Massachusets etc.

Didn't seem Carolina had an answer for 6'4" Breanna Stewart. I think she had 22 points and 5 blocked shots.
Carolina did not look like they were used to playing against such a tall team. Maybe we can rectify that before we play them again.

I agree that we didn't have an answer for a great player like Stewart but we need to be able to execute plays that gets the other team out of place and puts our players in position to score. UConn did that and we did not.

This game has been circled all season. The Lady Gamecocks knew exactly what was at stake. Gamecock fans knew this would be the most important game of the season(so far). These kinds of games tell you exactly what you have, how you measure up and how you play under intense pressure(literally and figuratively). It was a convincing loss, that Coach Staley and the staff will learn from. I have faith that this loss will only make the team more determined to improve.

Tennessee and Lady Vols fan here. I was pulling hard for USC, but figured UCONN would win by 12 points or so. Unfortunately, I think USC is over-rated, and UCONN is still elite. With that being said, I think USC will beat the Lady Vols later this month, but next season the Lady Vols will be really really good.

They are that good. They had a great white girl playing named Breanna Stewart. We don't have any white girls on our team... isn't that racist? I forgot, it is only racist if the team was all white. Jesse and Al would be to visit then.

Vols will be very good when DeShields is eligible next year. I was hoping she would come to SC but didnt happen. UCONN is at another level from everyone.

Firstly, the foul disparity wasn't THAT huge....17-11. Secondly, KML's elbow didn't come close to making contact. Their legs were tangled, KML drove forwarded and the defender went down. It looked a LOT worse than it really was. Go back and watch in slo-mo.....and as long as you're watching in slo-mo, go to 11:48 in the 2nd half and check out the elbow Mitchell throws at Jefferson.

The team from Conn. played very well but I don't think much of their arrogant coach trying to run the score up and shooting three point shots when they already had a twenty point lead with less than five minutes left. I guess they will win their third or fourth national championship in a row this year and more power to them. If they don't get upset, they'll face a Gamecock team that is ready for them on a neutral floor. They have a very large team, tall and wide.

Our job to stop 'em from scoring.

Not likely a very successful venture. Only UConn can stop UConn.

UConn is a great team.. SC is getting closer to that level... UConn wil, beyond a doubt, go undfeated...oh, wait...
Will probably get another chance in the tourney..

Have we been past the Sweet 16 yet? Seems like we made it to Elite 8, but I can't remember. Too many bad memories of MBB in my brain taking up space.

Garnet
have a point about the unstoppable quality/the starting five UCONNladies ALL being good shooters.

BUT, even the UCONN COACH said that (his game-before benching of TWO of his starters helped result in) ALL FOUR OF HIS BEST STATERS--ALL FOUR bringing their "A" game IN THE SAME NIGHT. In other words, that kind of crystaline brilliance probably won't happen EVERY time they play the Gamecocks.
(ALSO, if they play again this year, don't you think freshmen Asa Wilson and Bianca Cuevas will have grown ?
If/when the Lady Gamecocks play UCONN again in this spring of 2015, who do you think is going to be the most pissed off and determined ? AND who is going to benefit more from, this time playing in a neutral site ? I think the Gamecocks have a good shot down the road w/ UCONN II.

(Also, I think Coach Staley is going to start putting two of her best players in the game FASTER, than to keep keeping them on the bench, She has been bringing them into the game, together, after some minutes of play. She has been "letting them absorb the game plan of the opponents, etc." while just sitting on the bench at the beginning. chicken, a couple of things you said I had said elewhere= I totally AGREE. For example I had written elsewhere:

I'm not so sure about that. But here's the thing: as crazy as it may sound, in a tournament setting, me may not have to beat 'em. Who knows, maybe they end up having a bad night or a tough matchup along the way and drop a game to somebody like Stanford in the tournament. That's why you just play the games and see what happens. If we win all our games and they win all of theirs we'll likely meet them again in the national championship game. But you never know what my happen between now and then.

Hey ewecon. Go to hell I saw it and she knocked the crap out of her. I don't go to your board so stay the hell off of mine!

Only time we made the Elite 8 was under Susan Walvius. Duke beat us in the regional final.

usc1978, what's your problem? Don't tell me where I can and can't go. I'm not flaming and I didn't say anything disrespectful. I just called it as I saw it, just like you did. You just saw it wrong, in my opinion. This is a public forum and as long as I don't violate board rules (which I don't think I have), I have as much right to post here as you do. Did you go back and look at 11:48 in the 2nd half to see the Mitchell elbow? Of course you didn't. In fact, did you go back and look at the perceived KML incident? KML's elbow didn't come any near the defenders face. You're overreacting to a non-event. The ref was standing right there and didn't call anything, so while you may be an excellent armchair ref, the one at the game that matters didn't see the play through garnet colored glasses, and therefore didn't call a foul. KML is not the type of player that would purposely throw an elbow. She did NOT "knock the crap" out of her. Go back and look at a replay, which I'm sure you haven't. Whatever. Clearly, arguing with you is like trying to push a rope up a steep hill.

All that said, I'll be happy to go to Hell. Save me a seat, will ya?
