South Carolina held its final public fall ball scrimmage of the preseason, going 7.5 innings Friday night under the lights.
--Brannon Jordan and Trey Tujetsch started for their respective teams and were up and down in their outings. Jordan looked the best in the first inning, pitching around a one-out walk with back-to-back strikeouts, but hit a rough patch in the second. He'd give up three straight hits, starting with a homer to Brennan Milone, before striking out Jonah Beamon and Shane Shifflett to end the inning with two men on base.
He'd get up to 93 mph on his fastball and threw primarily a slider that was around 78-80 and topped out at 82.
Tujetsch struggled in his first inning, not really able to spot up his fastball at times, giving up a homer to Andrew Eyster and a double to Brady Allen, but got out of the inning with a strikeout. In his second inning he'd look really good, getting up to 89 mph on his fastball, giving up a two-out bloop single to Anthony Amicangelo before Amicangelo got caught stealing on a nice throw from Wes Clarke.
He'd sit in the upper 80s on his fastball but his best pitch Friday was a slider he used, getting it all the way up to 80 mph, but it mainly sat 75-77. He'd strike out Jax Cash with it to end his first inning.
--Speaking of Eyster, he continues to develop and show signs of a middle-of-the-order type bat. He'd finish the day with two extra base hits, smoking both balls. He's grown up a lot as a hitter and seems to just be a lot more comfortable in the box this fall than he was a year ago. Also played some right field Friday night.
--Another offensive standout was Milone, who cranked three homers on the in five at-bats and hit another one to the track opposite field. He hits for power and his eye is better than a lot of freshmen who come in. He also plays a very solid third base. He should be a day-one starter.
--Wes Clarke had a day, cranking a home run out and doubling at almost 106 off the bat in his final at-bat of the way. He's a guy who could make a serious impact this year. He's primarily a first baseman but has taken reps at catcher this fall.
--Graham Lawson looked probably the best he has all fall, ratcheting up his fastball to 96 mph Friday with a nice wipeout slider. When he missed, it was big (a double to Eyster and a homer to Sightler) but he looked good and poised. He'll continue to develop as he finds his elbow again but they're expecting him to be a big piece of this year's staff.
--Cam Tringali and TJ Shook both had similar outings, giving up a run over an inning and striking out one. Tringali did it giving up back to back doubles to Noah Campbell and Colin Burgess with one out before getting a fly out and strikeout to end the inning.
He'd get up to the low 90s on his fastball but threw a lot of sliders in the mid-70s with a lot of late break to it. He locked Jax Cash up with one to end his inning, striking him out looking.
Shook's only run came off a leadoff homer from Brennan Milone, who launched one to the visitor's bullpen. He'd rally to get two fly outs and a strikeout to end the inning, throwing primarily sliders in the mid-to-high 70s.
--Dylan Harley also threw an inning, giving up two runs on a triple from Anthony Amicangelo, and sitting 88-91. He's struggled with command at times this fall, and it showed Friday, but he has the stuff to get guys out if he's throwing strikes. He was have a really hard time getting his slider to break the way he wanted it to. He switched up his delivery this fall to throw exclusively from the stretch to try and simplify things a little with his mechanics.
He settled down in his second inning, giving up a leadoff double but getting out of the jam.
--John Gilreath continues to have a really good fall, giving up just an infield single but looking good outside of that. He'd strike out one and get up to 82 on a cutter he's been developing. Also threw a curveball that had some nice break on it.
--Danny Lloyd's fall continues to be really good, topping out at 94 today with a cutter at 86. He pitched one perfect inning, striking out one on a 92 mph fastball dotting outside corner. He will be a huge piece of the team this year.
--Bryant Bowen showing a lot of potential, hitting a bomb of a homer and barreling a lot more up over the course of the day. He's really come on as of late.
Recruiting notes
--JUCO shortstop commit Sawyre Thornhill was on hand to watch the scrimmage. Pretty big piece the Gamecocks added recently that can play and play well on the left side of the infield.
