6USC is waiting on a decision (August 1) from Charlotte offensive lineman TJ Moore, but here I’ll discuss two other offensive linemen still on the board.
South Broward (Florida) offensive lineman Jordon Carty earned an offer from South Carolina back in June following his performance in camp, and he was back on Monday for an unofficial visit. USC and NC State have been the two frontrunners for Carty (UNC and West Virginia have also offered) but I’m told the Gamecocks are pretty firmly out in front here. Carty is a very intriguing prospect because of his frame and his raw ability, and multiple folks have also told me that he plays with a mean streak. The academic situation will be a factor here, but he’s still someone that is very much on the boad for the Gamecocks.
There are two offensive linemen from within the state of South Carolina to keep an eye on as well in terms of offensive line recruiting. I’ll let Wes Mitchell handle letting you know about one, but Sumter’s Khalil Moore is another. I get the sense that he’s probably back on the board (he does not have an offer at this time), but he camped last month and has talked with the staff – Shawn Elliott and Will Muschamp. He’s 6-foot-4, 285-pounds and is known as a good run blocker.
Georgia defensive lineman Michael Allen recently released a top six consisting of Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Wake Forest, Alabama, and Southern Cal, but he’s not a prospect we’re heavily monitoring right now in terms of South Carolina’s board.
USC extended verbal offers at a Nashville satellite camp earlier this summer to linebacker TJ Minnifee and safety Chris Bell, both out of the state of Tennessee. Both camped in Columbia this week, with Minnifee working out on Tuesday and Bell on Wednesday. Because of some of the other candidates on the board and USC’s positioning, I don’t see US pushing for either at this time.
I mentioned candidates on the board/positioning, and USC has a strong shot with three different linebacker prospects. All of them were included in our recent “three to watch” piece: Brad Johnson, Sherrod Greene, and James Houston. Even with three linebacker prospects already in the fold, I get the sense that South Carolina would like to have all of them if it could work out. Johnson is a potential BUCK who could grow into a defensive end, while Greene and Houston are more of true linebackers. I believe USC leads for Johnson and Greene (both will be on campus this weekend) and the Gamecocks are in a good spot with Houston too after his summer visit in June. Houston told us after that trip that Florida and Wisconsin were the other main suitors for him.
Hamsah Nasirildeen visited Alabama on Monday and plans on seeing Florida and Florida State this coming weekend. The four-star safety told me that he does plan on making a trip back to Columbia before the summer is over to get another look at South Carolina. USC has consistently been in his top five, and USC’s early offer and his relationship with the coaching staff have paid dividends. FSU and Alabama have been thought of as the two frontrunners for much of the process.
