With South Carolina set to play Charleston Southern on Saturday, here are a few news and notes prior to the matchup:
*** First, make sure you check out our Q&A with Buccaneers’ head coach Autry Denson if you missed it. https://southcarolina.rivals.com/news/q-a-charleston-southern-head-coach-autry-denson
*** Following media availability earlier this week, Charleston Southern’s team was kind enough to let me hang around for a few minutes to get a glimpse of their squad.
I’ve coupled a bit of what I saw there (I didn’t hang around for team work or anything of that nature, just eyeballed some things) with what I saw out of the Bucs’ 2019 opener against Furman for the thoughts that will fill this space.

*** Charleston Southern has transitioned from an option-style attack to an Air Raid system for 2019. The first week was a rough outing from that standpoint against Furman; the Bucs had 192 passing yards and did not show a lot of explosive ability. The lone touchdown run came on a 52-yard scamper from running back Terrence Wilson on an excellent individual effort. Southern opted for a lot of quick-hitting throws to the flats and, later in the game, eventually got a little work done over the middle. The ball typically comes out fairly quickly, but if South Carolina can take away primary reads, there’s definitely an opportunity cause some issues in the pocket. Furman had five sacks and typically had four-man pressures.
*** In the run game, Southern will run a lot of zone read concepts. Their quarterback is mobile and Wilson (who’s from Batesburg-Leesville) can do some nice things at running back.
*** There also looks like an opportunity or opportunities (USC hopes for few of these, actually) to get a kick return going. Southern didn’t have any touchbacks on three kickoff attempts against Furman.
*** The glaring issue for the Bucs on defense for week one was in the running game. Furman racked up 369 yards on over 9 yards per carry and scored 5 rushing touchdowns. The Paladins only lost 10 yards for the game when rushing, so there was little in the way of negative plays. Southern looked especially susceptible when the ball bounced to the outside. Rico Dowdle and Tavien Feaster should have opportunities for some big plays on the ground.
